Mortal Engines is a steam-punk inspired post-apocalyptic adventure movie from the mind of the man who brought us Lord of the Rings.

Serving as one of the producers and co-writers, Peter Jackson’s next movie is based on a novel of the same name.

The novel by Phillip Reeve describes a world in which cities have become motorised and prey on one another.

Mortal Engines has an upcoming release date, and a trailer now available to watch online.

What is the release date of Mortal Engines?

The post-apocalyptic movie is set for a Christmastime release.

In the UK, Mortal Engines will be in cinemas on December 8, 2018.

Anyone in the USA who wants to see the movie will have to wait a little while longer.

The USA release date is December 14, 2018.

Who is in the cast of Mortal Engines?

Icelandic actress Hera Hilmar plays Hester Shaw, a disfigured, fugitive assassin with a personal vendetta against Thaddeus.

Robert Sheehan, best known for his portrayal of Nathan on the Chanel 4 series Misfits plays Tom Natsworthy.

Natsworthy is an apprentice historian of London, who is thrown out of the city and forced to ally himself with Hester and the resistance.

Matrix, Lord of the Rings, and Black 47′ star Hugo Weaving plays villain Thaddeus Valentine.

Valentine is the Head of the Guild of Historians and the father of Katherine Valentine (played by Leila George).

Patrick Malahide plays the Mayor of London Magnus Crome.

Jihae, a South Korean singer and actress, plays a pilot and leader of the Anti-Traction League resistance group named Anna Fang.

The group bands together against the moving cities devouring Earth’s resources.

Ronan Raftery, an Irish stage actor, plays Bevis Pod, an apprentice engineer befriended by Katherine.

The prolific American actor Stephen Lang plays Shrike, who raised Hester and then went to work for the mayor, Crome.

Shrike is the last of an undead battalion of soldiers known as Stalkers.

The stalkers were casualties of war reanimated with machine parts.

Other cast members include Colin Salmon as Tom’s historian boss Chudleigh Pomeroy, Regé-Jean Page as Captain Khora and Mark Hadlow as the villainous leader of a small town called Speedwell named Orme Wreyland.

New Zealand born Caren Pistorius plays Hester’s mother Pandora, with Leifur Sigurdarson as an aviator named Nils Lindstrom, Menik Gooneratne plays Sathya; and Australian actor Andrew Lees in an unnamed role.

Additionally, Sophie Cox plays Clytie Potts, Aaron Jackson plays Gench, Stephen Ure portrays Pewsey, Kee Chan portrays Governor Kwan, and Mark Mitchinson portrays Vambrace.

What is the plot of Mortal Engines?

Mortal Engines takes place hundreds of years after civilisation was destroyed by a cataclysmic event.

Cities have turned to predators on wheels which prey on one another.

A mysterious young woman, Hester Shaw, emerges as the only one who can stop London from devouring everything in its path.

Hester is described as “feral, and fiercely driven by the memory of her mother.”

She meets Tom Natsworthy, a twenty-something Londoner who has only ever lived inside the travelling London, when he foils her plan to kill Thaddeus Valentine, the man she blames for her mother’s death.

She later joins forces with Tom Natsworthy, an outcast from London, along with Anna Fang, a dangerous outlaw with a bounty on her head to thwart the monstrous city.
