Venom opened with a record-breaking gross at the US box office last weekend; easily winning the highest October launch of all time.

However there’s one small plot hole that’s been picked up on by some fans – and now Ruben Fleischer has responded.

The mistake in question concerns the symbiote Riot, which is seen at the start of the movie in Malaysia trying to reach San Francisco, and bonds with an elderly woman.

A symbiote cannot stay with the same human host for an extended period of time – but when there’s a six-month time jump, we see Riot still has the same one.

“Our idea was that Riot was using up the life force of whoever he took, and then he jumped ship when he’d consumed them and then find a new host to carry him further on his journey,” Fleischer told GameSpot.

“Yeah, that’s a good question. That’s one of our few – hopefully – few logic bumps.

“But we had to have a passage of time in order to show Eddie’s downfall, and that was the one thing that doesn’t entirely track.”

Venom received cold reviews from most critics, and currently holds a 30% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Fans have taken to it much more than the reviewers, and it has a B+ score from CinemaScore – which surveys people who are confirmed to have seen the end product.

Tom Hardy had previously said that his favourite moments to film did not make the end product.

Asked what he most enjoyed shooting, he told ComicsExplained: ”There are, like, 30 to 40 minutes’ worth of scenes that aren’t in this movie… all of them.

“Mad puppeteering scenes, dark comedy scenes. You know what I mean? They just never made it in.”

But Fleischer has shot down the notion that the film was re-edited in order to meet its target age rating.

“We only ever talked about this movie as being PG-13,” he said.

“What I’ve said in the past is that we wanted to push the violence to the hilt.

“The Dark Knight was always a huge reference point for me, personally, just as far as how far you could take a PG-13.”

Venom is out now.
