Flash Gordon remake: Will there be a new Flash Gordon movie?

Flash Gordon is one of those pop culture phenomena that cannot quite be explained.

The original, which debuted in 1980, was based on the King Features comic strip of the same name created by Alex Raymond.

With a relatively unknown cast, save for the giant that is Brian Blessed and the infamous Topol, Flash Gordon went on to take a surprisingly high amount at the box office.

With such a huge cult following, it was only a matter of time before a remake was put into the works.

Will there be a remake of Flash Gordon?

The Hollywood Reporter today reported there will indeed be a remake of the 1980 classic.

The studio behind the remake is Fox and they have tapped Overlord director Julius Avery to helm the project.

Avery is writing and directing the movie, though no other details have been confirmed.

The original movie left room for a sequel, but that never came to fruition.

In the final moments, Ming the Merciless’ laugh can be heard echoing across the black screen.

Following the credits, the words The End appear on the screen, then followed by a question mark.

The original Flash Gordon movie follows the story of renegade scientist Dr Hans Zarkov (Chaim Topol ) who heads to space to rectify a problem of ‘hot hail’ and a sudden eclipse, which NASA claims are nothing to fear.

Along with Gordon and Zarkov, Dale Arden (Melody Anderson) joins them on the trip to space to try and fix things.

They land on planet Mongo, where the despot Ming the Merciless (Max von Sydow) is attacking Earth out of pure boredom.

With the help of a race of Hawkmen led by Prince Voltan (Brian Blessed), Flash and the gang struggle to save their home planet.

Matthew Vaughn had been previously in the running to helm the project for Fox.

Though no longer directing, Vaughn will remain a producer on the movie.

John Davis and Hearst are also on board, both of whom have rights to Flash Gordon.

Even if you don’t know the movie, you’re guaranteed to know the theme song.

Flash was written and performed by Queen, and has continued to be just as big of a phenomenon as the movie that spawned it.

In fact, the entire soundtrack was composed, performed and produced by Queen.

The original was directed by Mike Hodges and produced by Dino De Laurentiis.

Believe it or not, Italian director Federico Fellini was first tapped to direct the 1980s original.

There is no confirmed release date for Flash Gordon as of yet.
