The Girl In The Spider's Web: How does new film fit into the Dragon Tattoo series?

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is part of a series of novels by Stieg Larsson.

The Millenium series of novels has already been turned into movies, twice over.

Yellow Bird, a Swedish film production company made their own film versions, all of which were released in 2009 starring Michael Nyqvist and Noomi Rapace.

In America, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo was made into a film in 2011 starring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara.

Where does the new The Girl In The Spider’s Web movie fit into the series?

The Girl In The Spider’s Web is based on a novel of the same name by David Lagercrantz, based on the characters from Larsson’s original works.

The movie’s title may inspire some confusion for fans of the novels.

The fourth book and this new movie are called The Girl In The Spider’s Web.

But the movie is not based on this fourth book.

Instead, the movie is a wholly recast version of the first American movie (based on the first book) which picks up after the events of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

The Girl In The Spider’s Web is being directed by Fede Alvarez, of Evil Dead and Don’t Breathe fame.

Steven Knight, Jay Basu, and Alvarez have written the screenplay, which shifts the traditional focus from Blomkvist to Lisbeth.

Speaking to IndieWire, Alvarez said: “For such a feminine icon like she is, it was kind of unfair that she was there to service the man’s story in the first one and then the second and third one.

“I was like, ‘We need to make a movie about her.’ She is the centre of it.

“We started the story with her and we end the story with her.

“And, yeah, Blomkvist is there, but to serve her story. … That’s what I felt wasn’t done, and it was exciting for me to go and make a movie which is going to be all about Lisbeth Salander.”

The movie will also give more details on Salander’s backstory.

Sverrir Gudnason takes up the role of Mikael Blomkvist.

The official plot of The Girl In The Spider’s Web reads: “Fired from the National Security Agency, Frans Balder recruits hacker Lisbeth Salander to steal FireWall, a computer program that can access codes for nuclear weapons worldwide.

“The download soon draws attention from an NSA agent who traces the activity to Stockholm.

“Further problems arise when Russian thugs take Lisbeth’s laptop and kidnap a math whiz who can make FireWall work.

“Now, Lisbeth and an unlikely ally must race against time to save the boy and recover the codes to avert disaster.”

The Girl In The Spider’s Web is out in UK cinemas on November 21, 2018.
