Netflix movies cinema release dates: What Netflix films will have a theatrical release?
Netflix is known to many as one of the biggest streaming sites out there.
With a wealth of content to choose from, subscribers have access to films and series from all over the world.
But housing existing content wasn’t enough, and Netflix began making its own content.
Now, three of Netflix’s movies have had premieres on the film festival circuit, and are getting their own theatrical releases.
Which Netflix movies are heading to cinemas?
The three movies heading to cinemas are Roma, Bird Box, and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.
But what makes these movies different from other Netflix films to get theatrical releases is this:
All three are getting limited theatrical runs prior to their release on Netflix.
The decision to have a limited theatrical release hints at Netflix’s desire to increase its chances for awards season.
The Coen Brothers’ The Ballad of Buster Scruggs will head to cinemas for a limited run from November 8 in Los Angeles, as well as New York, San Francisco and Curzon Theater in London.
After its release on Netflix, on November 16, it will get an expanded run in more US and European cities.
ROMA will have its own limited theatrical engagements from November 21 in Los Angeles, New York and Mexico.
From November 29, the run will expand through other big US cities and London.
From December 7, the movie will get further international releases.
Then, on December 14 ROMA will be released on Netflix with a further expanded theatrical release in the US and globally.
By mid-December, ROMA will have been released in 20 territories globally, and 70mm presentations are also being planned during the movie’s run in cinemas.
The Sandra Bullock-starring Bird Box will be in some cinemas from December 13, also in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and London.
Bird Box is out on Netflix on December 21, and like Buster Scruggs will get its run extended throughout the US and European cities.
Roma’s director Alfonso Cuaron said: “Seeing Roma on the big screen is just as important as ensuring people all over the world have the chance to experience it in their homes.”
“Roma was photographed in expansive 65mm, complemented by a very complex Atmos sound mix.
“While a movie theatre offers the best possible experience for ROMA, it was designed to be equally meaningful when experienced in the intimacy of one’s home.”
Scott Stuber, head of Netflix’s film group said: “These upcoming engagements are following the success of our theatrical and Netflix releases of Private Life and 22 July.
“There’s been an overwhelming response to all of our films this festival season, including Outlaw King, which will be in theatres and on Netflix next week, and this plan is building on that momentum.
“Netflix’s priority is our members and our filmmakers, and we are constantly innovating to serve them.
“Our members benefit from having the best quality films from world-class filmmakers and our filmmakers benefit by being able to share their artistry with the largest possible audience in over 190 countries worldwide.”
