Terror in the Woods true story: Is Lifetime's Slender Man movie based on a true story?

Those in the UK may be unfamiliar with the American TV channel Lifetime.

Famous for its made for TV movies, Lifetime has a history of making sensational, sometimes melodramatic, films.

Their latest film adaptation is called Terror in the Woods.

The psychological horror movie is based on the story of the 2014 Slender Man attack.

How much of it is based on the truth?

The foundation of Terror in the Woods seems to be based on the true story of the Slender Man attack.

The movie sees two 12-year-old girls sacrifice their friend to the internet legend called Suzerain.

In real life, two pre-teen girls attempted to kill their friend as part of a blood sacrifice to the legendary creature Slender Man.

The girls thought if they did this, they would become “proxies” of the Slender Man.

The 2014 attack, which took place in Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA, was previously made into another major movie.

Slender Man had its debut in the summer of 2018 and was met with mostly negative reviews.

So Terror in the Woods may benefit from its straight to TV format, as well as from its fictionalisation of the story.

Christina Ricci, best known for her off-kilter characters like Wednesday Addams Katrina Van Tassel in Sleepy Hollow, produced the movie.

The premise of the movie follows Rachel (Ella West Jerrier) and Kaitlyn (Sophie Grace) who attempt to use their friend, Emily (Skylar Morgan Jones), for a blood sacrifice.

They do this with the intention of protecting their families after learning about a demon on the internet.

Emily survives the attack, causing an investigation to look into Rachel and Kaitlyn, and the internet’s effect on their mental health.

Despite Lifetime’s reputation for sometimes poorly-acted films, Terror in the Woods’ trailer is a spooky and intriguing 30 seconds.

The movie takes plenty of liberties from the true story, from changing the names of the girls to the name of the Internet demon.

After the disappointment that was the Slender Man movie, Terror in the Woods may prove a success.

Whether it will be available in the UK is still unclear.

Terror in the Woods is available on the Lifetime channel in America.
