An Atlantic weather system which has developed into the latest big storm of the season will bring snow to high ground when it crashes into the UK in days.

Storm Diana will sweep in from the south west, drenching the length of the country from Tuesday.

Before the gales will hit there will be a widespread frost on Sunday and Monday nights as temperatures plummet before the storm hits and foggy conditions will hamper drivers.

The Met Office has warned of stormy conditions following the cold weather as Storm Diana hits Britain.

Deputy Chief Meteorologist, Dan Harris told the Mirror there will be a “major change” in the UK’s weather next week.

He said: “It now looks very likely that we will see a major change in the UK’s weather early in the week ahead.

“We expect spells of wet and windy weather to sweep across the UK from the southwest from Tuesday, although at the moment there is uncertainty around the timing and the focus for the heaviest rain and strong winds.”

Meanwhile, the Met Office’s weather outlook for Tuesday to Thursday reads: “Turning more unsettled across all areas with heavy rain or showers.

“Often windy, particularly through Wednesday and Thursday, with gales likely. Turning much milder, after a cold start.”

From the middle of the week the weather turns even more unsettled causing a blustery start for western regions including Northern Ireland, Wales and south west England.

The front will move eastwards throughout the day, hitting Scotland, the Midlands, the east coast, London and the south east in the afternoon.

BBC Weather forecaster Alina Jenkins said: “A blustery start to Tuesday across Northern Ireland, Wales and southwest England.

“All of this will be working its way eastwards as the day wears on and as it bumps into the colder air, we are likely to see some snow, not amounting to much, over the Pennines and higher ground of Scotland through Tuesday afternoon.

“It’s a windy day, particularly for western coasts, these are average speeds but the gusts are likely to be much higher.”

Temperatures will be in single figures for the beginning of the week but turn milder once Storm Diana hits.

It could reach an unseasonal 13C in parts of the country by the end of the week, although wind chills will make it feel much colder.

Alina added: “Temperatures still 6C or 7C the further east you are but that milder air will arrive from the west and that is a sign of things to come for the week ahead.

“It will slowly turn milder, but we will also see a risk of gales and also some heavy rain at times.”

The BBC Weather outlook for Tuesday to Thursday said: “From Tuesday, the weather will turn more unsettled, with a front moving in from the south-west bringing widespread rain to most of the south and west.

“Wednesday looks like seeing some potentially very windy weather with further outbreaks of rain, particularly in the west.

“The strongest winds will become confined to the north on Thursday with rain here and showers elsewhere.”

Storm Diana, which was named by the Portuguese Meteorological Authority due the area of low pressure’s early impact on the Azores, will be the fourth named storm to batter the British Isles this autumn and winter.

Storms Ali and Bronagh brought travel disruption and wrecked havoc in September while Storm Callum hit in October.

Three people were killed in separate incidents when Storm Callum hit the UK.

Two men drowned, one in Brighton and another in South Wales, and another was killed in a landslide in Carmarthenshire.
