Baby names 2018: Most popular girls and boys names REVEALED – has yours topped the list?

As the years fly by, name trends newborn children shift and change. From traditional favourites to characters from films, each year, the popularity of particular monikers can often rise – or fall.

Babycentre has released its list of the top names for both boys and girls this year.

Gone are the Sues of the 1950s and the Alans of the 1960s, and even Sarah – popular in the 1980s – has fallen from the top spot on the 2018 popularity list.

In 2017, the annual report revealed Olivia was a firm favourite – something which the Office for National Statistics offical release was in agreement with.

Babycentre’s 2017 list also highlighted Muhammad was most popular last year – while Oliver came in at a close second for baby boys born in the UK.

And, a year on, it seems these top choices are just as popular in 2018 as they were 12 months ago.

An extrememly popular boys name this year is Noah – while Harry takes the fourth spot.

Leo, George, and Jack, also feature in the top 10 – with Charlie close behind these monikers in eighth place.

Elsewhere on the list of 100 names, you’ll find Tommy, Toby, and John.

There’s also been a number of newcomers to the list this year – with Grayson, Sam, Felix, Louis, Jasper, and Aayan being featured.

The top 100 girls names have also seen nine names make their debuts on the list this year – which include Aaliyah, Aisha, and Bonnie.

Kiara, Iris, Victoria, Elena and Eden also made an appearance in the top 100 – while Niamh, Sara, and Skye didn’t scoop a spot on the list this time around.

And, while anyone called Esme, Scarlett, Molly, or Fatima may have spotted their name on the list, these monikers were identified as some of the fastest fallers in 2018.

These names had dropped by more than 20 places within the year.

Amongst the two lists released by Babycentre, there were plenty of royal favourites.

Charlotte – a name chosen by Prince William and Kate Middleton for their daughter back in May 2015 – landed 15th place.

It seems five-year-old Prince George of Cambridge also shares his moniker with a number of youngsters, seeing as it was the sixth most popular choice for male babies this year, Babycentre said.

Prince Louis’ name was revealed shortly after his birth in April this year, and months later, it has now entered the annual charts as a popular baby name in the UK.

So, with another royal arrival on the horizon, could parents-to-be Meghan Markle and Prince Harry be about to have an influence over baby name trends in 2019?
