Disney lovers have been enjoying a renaissance of their favourite films. The mouse-house has released remakes of plenty of original stories with an extra sprinkling of 21st century magic. From Beauty and the Beast to Dumbo, all manner of creatures are being brought into the modern day.

And The Lion King, perhaps Disney unequivocally beloved story, is about to join their ranks.

When does The Lion King come out in cinemas in the UK and USA?

Though the concern around spoilers for the tale of Simba seem slim, there may be some people concerned about details of the remake being leaked on either side of the Atlantic.

Fans have nothing to fear, however.

However, these two countries are not the first to be treated to a photorealistic Simba and company.

France and Sweden will see The Lion King in cinemas first, with a release date of July 17, 2019.

Nor are the UK and USA even second on the list.

On July 18, 2019, Argentina, Brazil, Germany, Denmark, Hungary, Portugal, Russia, and Singapore will be able to see The Lion King at the movie theatre.

Last on the list is Italy, with a July 21, 2019 release.

The Lion King remake has been in the works since September 2016.

In the aftermath of Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book success, he was tapped to direct the photorealistic Lion King remake..

On October 13, Disney hired Jeff Nathanson to write the screenplay, which given the teaser trailer seems will rely heavily on the original movie and source material.

To the delight of fans of the original movie, on November 1, Disney announced the man who scored the 1994 original, Hans Zimmer, would return to score the remake.

Then, by November 28 Elton John had signed on to rework his music from the 1994 movie prior to his retirement.

The next day, the studio announced Beyoncé would join Elton John in the reworking of the soundtrack, and that with Tim Rice, they would would create a new song to play during the end credits.

By early 2017, many of the main cast members had signed on for the project.

Principal photography began in mid-2017 on a blue screen stage in Los Angeles, allowing for the specific type of animation needed for this kind of remake.

Virtual Production Supervisor Girish Balakrishnan wrote on his professional website that The Lion King filmmakers used motion capture and VR/AR technologies for the movie.

The Lion King is out in cinemas on July 19, 2019.
