Disney fans are having a good time as of late. From Jungle Book to Aladdin, fans have had the chance to see their favourite childhood tales reimagined. With 21st century technology adding a modern day sparkle, Disney has bene raking in both profit and positive reviews from their remakes.

A universally adored Disney film, The Lion King is being treated to that same contemporary sheen.

And you can watch the trailer for The Lion King right here at Express.co.uk.

Taking a beloved story and remaking it always brings with it some risks.

But with the new Lion King trailer, which was released last weekend, Disney is coming out as the king of the jungle with this gamble.

According to Variety, The Lion King teaser trailer was viewed 224.6 million times in its first 24 hours.

This breaks Disney’s record for most-watched trailer in a day, setting The Lion King up for good things.

However, the record-breaking may also bring with it a level of added scrutiny from critics and fans alike.

Reviews are already divided, and the movie isn’t even out yet.

Quartz writer Adam Epstein had almost nothing good to say, particularly about the animation.

This is to be expected, as die-hard fans of classic 2D Disney animation may not be enamoured with the photorealistic style employed in the remake.

Epstein wrote: “What the remake gains in realism, it loses in emotion and distinctiveness.

“The remake’s animation unfortunately exists somewhere in the uncanny valley—nearly perfect, with something just a little off.

“If you squint your eyes, you can believe that these are real animals.

“And yet the process of turning the whimsical cartoon into a hyperrealistic simulacrum of the pride lands of Africa has sapped it of its lush colouring and its deeply emotive characters.”

Refusing to pull any punches, Epstein also added: “By making The Lion King more real, Disney has, ironically, sucked all the life out of it.”

Despite the ‘lifeless’ animation, the cast is certainly emotive.

The voice cast includes, thankfully, James Earl Jones as returning as Mufasa.

Donald Glover, Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner take on the voice roles of Simba, Pumbaa, and Timon, respectively.

But the real ruler of the plain is Beyoncé as Nala, who everyone (regardless of their feelings about animation style) is excited to hear.

Lion King will come to cinemas in the UK and USA on July 19, 2019
