Captain Marvel trailer: Who plays Mar-Vell in Captain Marvel?

The new Captain Marvel is both an origin story and a war movie. The film stars en media res, or in the middle of the action, with Carol Danvers already full of Kree superpowers. As Captain Marvel, Danvers joins forces with the Kree to fight the Skrull aliens, intent on destroying Earth. But the movie also teases Danvers’ attempts to remember her past, and figure out who she really is.

Integral to this process is Mar-Vell, the Kree alien who embued Danvers with Kree DNA and both saved her life and transformed her into Captain Marvel.

Who plays Mar-Vell?

Up until the trailer was released, many assumed Jude Law is the man behind the Mar-Vell moniker.

Even IMDB confirms this and lists Law’s character as Walter Lawson/ Mar-Vell.

However, a leak from Funko, the company which produces the beloved Pop! figures has thrown suspicion on this theory.

An image leaked of a figure which appears to be Law’s character, but the name reads Yon-Rogg.

Yon-Rogg is a Starforce commander, like Mar-Vell, so the leak could very well be accurate despite Funko changing the figurine’s name.

Keen-eyed fans have speculated Mar-Vell may be played by Annette Bening, who features in a subtle but emotionally impactful scene.

The trailer shows Bening narrating how Carol Danvers became Captain Marvel.

She says: “Your life began the day it nearly ended.

“We found you with no memory.

“We made you one of us, so you could live longer, stronger, superior.

You were reborn.”

A conflicting theory, however, speculates that Bening is, in fact, the corporeal version of the Marvel concept known as the Supreme Intelligence.

So, if you stick to the facts known so far, the safest bet is Jude Law is playing Mar-Vell, and the Funko leak was a mistake.

Or it is a well-constructed ploy on Marvel’s behalf, which worked due to Law and Bening’s part in it.

Fans will only know for sure when the movie is released next spring.

For now, forums like Reddit and spaces like Twitter will have to suffice for rampant speculation.

Captain Marvel is released in UK cinemas on March 8, 2019.
