Captain Marvel trailer: How does THIS new fan theory link Captain Marvel to Avengers 4?

Marvel fans are known for taking the tiniest detail and spinning a substantial theory from it. Some are more believable than others, but when it comes to Avengers 4, the lack of information from the studio has created a vacuum. Nature abhors a vacuum, after all, and a plethora of theories, ranging from credible to absurd, have been posted to sites like Reddit. With the second Captain Marvel trailer out this week, fans have had new fodder for their speculations.

How does THIS new theory link Captain Marvel and Avengers 4?

Thomas Bacon of ScreenRant spotted a small detail he claims links the two films via the Infinity Stones.

Paraphrasing the theory, Ethan Anderton of SlashFilm wrote: “One sequence in the Captain Marvel trailer features Carol Danvers and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) flying in a white quinjet out of what appears to be a SHIELD base of some kind. In fact, one shot of the quinjet has a Project PEGASUS logo on the wing (via ScreenRant).

“That just so happens to be the codename for the project that saw SHIELD researching the mysterious item known as the Tesseract, which was uncovered by Howard Stark some years after Captain America crash landed with it in the sea in Captain America: The First Avenger.

“We know that because it’s referenced in The Avengers and that’s how Loki comes into possession of the artefact.”

Anderton goes on to describe how the base from which Loki retrieves the Tesseract is in the Mojave desert, not too far from Los Angeles, where part of Captain Marvel reportedly takes place.

He adds: “Our sources say the presence of the PEGASUS logo isn’t just a throwaway Easter egg.

“Instead, this SHIELD base plays a key part in Captain Marvel, and the Tesseract itself might be an object of desire for the Skrulls, especially since it has one of the Infinity Stones inside it.”

This theory neatly fits the disparate pieces of Marvel’s movies together.

With a universe as expansive as the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it can be easy to lose track of connecting threads.

Captain Marvel’s second trailer reminds audiences that the creative team still has a grasp on the overall arch of the story.

But as for spoiling or predicting future Avengers or Captain Marvel plots, Anderton has a theory.

He wrote: “One has to wonder if maybe the Kree are using Carol Danvers as a way of infiltrating SHIELD, much like the Skrulls are trying to do, in order to get the Tesseract for themselves.”

The Tesseract is a hugely important object in the MCU.

Its prominence in the Captain Marvel movie sets the film up to be integral to the future of the MCU.

And Captain Marvel is set to be the face of the next phase of the shared film universe.

Avengers 4 will close out Phase Three, and Kevin Feige, Marvel’s head, has explicitly said Captain Marvel will lead the way for Phase 4.

Whether any of this proves true remains to be seen, with the Avengers 4 trailer rumoured to be dropping any hour now…
