Avengers Endgame trailer: Does the Avengers Endgame trailer prove Hawkeye becomes RONIN?

The Avengers: Endgame trailer has dropped and, as predicted, a new slew of theories are being spun as we speak. From the missing Avengers to Ant-Man, fans have been parsing the short clip for as many details as they can find. Twitter has become a hotbed for fans to express their wildest speculations. But a theory now posited having to do with a character conspicuously absent from Avengers Infinity War may actually make sense…

Tim Reed, a fan on Twitter, posted a question regarding Ronin to Jeremy Conrad, the editor of MCU Cosmic.

Reed asked: “@ManaByte Does the trailer seem to confirm that Clint becomes Ronin?”

Conrad replied: “Well he’s wearing a hood, has a sword, and is hunting Yakuza (maybe not human ones though) in Japan…”

Though Conrad doesn’t give a definitive answer, his use of “well” and the ellipsis at the end seems to indicate the answer is yes.

Historically, the word or title of ronin refers to the Japanese term for a masterless samurai, a lone warrior.

In Marvel, the mantle is held by multiple characters through the comic universe, and in the cinematic universe, it appears Hawkeye is taking it over.

Canonically, Clint Barton is the second person to labour under the Ronin identity.

He became Ronin upon rejoining the New Avengers in the aftermath of Civil War but attempted to hand the costume back to his predecessor.

The trailer shows Hawkeye, aka Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner), wielding a katana which heavily hints at his transformation. 

The character was notoriously absent from Infinity War, which led fans to believe he had survived the snap.

Now, with the release of the teaser, that suspicion has been proven true. 

Despite the fervour over Avengers: Endgame, some Marvel fans have already moved on to Spider-Man: Far From Home.

The Russo Brothers released the Avengers: Endgame trailer via Twitter today at 1pm GMT.

“They wrote: “For those who have been here since the beginning. For those who have joined along the way.

“For the best fans in the Universe. This trailer is for you… With much love and gratitude for your patience, The RB’s.”

Fans have replied with memes and excitement, much as you would expect.

Avengers: Endgame is out in cinemas on April 26, 2019.
