Queen Maxima of the Netherlands puts on a colourful display for welcoming ceremony

Queen Maxima of the Netherlands is known for her love of colourful fashion and did not disappoint today in Amsterdam.

The 47-year-old monarch joined her husband King Willem-Alexander, 51, for a welcoming ceremony in the country’s capital city.

The royal couple officially welcomed the President of the Republic of Cabo Verde, Jorge Carlos de Almeida Fonseca, 68, and his wife Lígia Dias Fonseca on Dam Square.

Following an inspection of the guard of honour, the King and Queen along with their guests, who are on a two-date state visit, will attend a reception at the Royal Palace.

Queen Maxima opted for a royal blue round-neck coat for the occasion with two large buttons down the centre.

Her Majesty teamed a matching hat and handbag, in the same material to her outfit, and added a pair of towering purple pumps from Christian Louboutin.

The Argentinian-born Queen appeared to be wearing a green dress underneath her block colour coat.

Drop diamond and emerald earrings complimented her dress and simple make-up enhanced her natural beauty.

The First Lady of Cape Verde wore a contrasting scarlet dress with a beige coat tied at the waist for her meeting with the Dutch royals.

She added a coordinating red hat, a pair of red gloves and matching shoes to her outfit.

During the day, the two couples will visit the Van Gogh Museum, and be given a special tour by Willem van Gogh, the great-grandson of the artist’s brother Theo van Gogh.

They will later visit the University of Amsterdam and conclude the day with a state banquet at the Royal Palace.
