The film has smashed box office expectations worldwide. It has also proved many critics wrong. Despite accusations that it avoided the tougher truths of the story, the band themselves and legions of loyal fans have embraced the celebratiom of Queen and Freddie Mercury. The heart of Bohemian Rhapsody is Rami Malek’s incredible performance and the Mr Robot actor has spilled the secrets of how he brought such an iconic star to life. He used a trick that would have thrilled the outrageous and rebellious Freddie – but probably didn’t please the Bohemian Rhapsody cast and crew quite so much.

Page Six reported Malek’s confession: “Trying to be as unpredictable and spontaneous as Freddie Mercury was, I never let the camera know where I was going. I felt everyone could play catch-up to this character’s moves.

“Jumping into someone else’s light, a gorgeous thing to do, gives you an adrenaline rush.

“No one will ever be like him. I hope I got close.”

Malek also revealed how he nailed Freddie’s instantly recognisable voice and mannerisms – and the shocking thing he did with his teeth.

Malek persuaded the producers to send him to London for dialect coaching, as well as practicing movement, singing and piano for up to eight hours a day.

He said: “We would just sit there and watch him in an interview, and see when he moves in and out, and blinks, and covers his teeth.”

Speaking of teeth, Malek had false teeth to recreate Freddie’s unique look, and after filming finished he did te most outrageous thing he could tying of, in honour of the Queen frontman.

Malek told the New Yorker: “I kept the teeth. Well, I had the teeth cast in gold. It is the most ostentatious thing I have probably ever done, and, in the spirit of Freddie, being as outlandish as I could, I said, ‘What would be more him than casting these in gold?’”

Brian May and Roger Taylor have already confirmed even they were shocked by Makek’s recreation of their old friend, and, at times, forgot they were watching an actor.

The young star expalined the key was finding Freddie’s incredible spirit: “When I started to embrace that aspect of him—the mischief, the joy, the freedom, and the lack of any inhibition, or so it seems—that’s when the real spontaneity started to occur for me. Basically, the ownership of it. And that was him—tremendous ownership of who he was.”

BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY IS OUT NOW.
