Bohemian Rhapsody: Rami Malek’s Freddie Mercury set for Oscars GLORY?

Released a couple of months ago, Bohemian Rhapsody was met with mixed reviews. However, this didn’t stop Queen fans heading in their droves to see the Freddie Mercury biopic. To date the film has made almost $600 million worldwide and is now the highest grossing music biopic of all time. But are the movie and its star Malek now heading for the Oscars?

In the last week, Bohemian Rhapsody has been nominated for a number of big awards.

Despite being more of a musical, the film has received a nod in the Best Motion Picture Drama category at the Golden Globes.

Meanwhile, Malek, who plays Freddie, has been nominated for Best Actor.

These have now been complemented by nods from the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

The cast of Bohemian Rhapsody have been nominated for Outstanding Performance by a cast in a Motion Picture.

While Malek has a nod for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role.

According to Forbes, it now wouldn’t be surprising for Malek to be nominated for Best Actor at the Oscars in February.

And the film itself, despite not being your typical Oscary flick, may be nominated for Best Picture.

Malek’s competition is strong though, in A Star Is Born’s Bradley Cooper and Vice’s Christian Bale.

However, Malek may have the upper-hand in having played his real-life figure.

The Academy often has a tendency to give the Best Actor and Best Actress gong to those who’ve played famous people; like Gary Oldman’s Churchill, Meryl Streep’s Thatcher, Colin Firth’s King George VI and Daniel Day Lewis’ Lincoln.

Nevertheless, Bale is nominated for having played Dick Cheney, but maybe Malek will pull it off for Freddie.
