Bohemian Rhapsody: The OUTRAGEOUS thing Rami Malek did with Freddie Mercury's TEETH

This film isn’t just rocking fans, it is it is a Killer Queen of a blockbuster, smashing box office records and proving that the love for Freddie Mercury and the band has never died. The rock biopic has already taken more than $600million worldwide and much of that is due to Malek’s towering central performance and the uncanny way he brings the much-missed icon back to life on the big screen. His dedication to the role is unmistakable and if you had any doubt he failed to capture the true spirit of Freddie, just look what he did with the singer’s legendary teeth.

Freddie was known to be self-conscious about his teeth. His pronounced overbite was caused by four extra teeth that forced his front of his mouth forward.

Malek has talked about how he studied the way Freddie was aware of this throughout his life and compensated in public: “We would just sit there and watch him in an interview, and see when he moves in and out, and blinks, and covers his teeth.”

So, why didn’t the multi-millionaire star have his teeth fixed?

Rudi Dolezal filmed several documentaries about the Queen frontman and explained: “He was very afraid that if he changed his teeth that his particular sound of [his voice] would go away.”

Malek started practicing with fake teeth for the role a year before filming started and when it was all over he knew exactly what to do.

He said: “I kept the teeth. Well, I had the teeth cast in gold.

“It is the most ostentatious thing I have probably ever done, and, in the spirit of Freddie, being as outlandish as I could, I said, ‘What would be more him than casting these in gold?’”

In fact, the actor revealed that understanding Freddie’s relationship to his teeth was a key to understanding the man himself. 

Malek told The Wrap: “They started out being pretty difficult to deal with. We tried out all different sizes and when they first went in I felt very insecure, but immediately I compensated. Physically, I started to sit with more posture and elegance and I thought, ‘Oh, he is so elegant!’

“You see him covering up his lips and his teeth all the time, and I could never quite get the hang of it. But as soon as those teeth went in, it was done. It was little things like that that were very informative for me.”

Malek has suggested he may auction off the gold teeth for charity. Surely, nothing would have tickled Freddie more?
