Mary Poppins Returns runtime: How long is Mary Poppins Returns? Total runtime revealed

Mary Poppins Returns follows the life of the now adult bank teller Michael Banks. Banks, who has three children, Anabel, John, and Georgia, learns that his house will be repossessed in five days unless he can pay back a loan. His only hope is to find a missing certificate that shows proof of valuable shares that his father left him years earlier. Just as all seems lost, Michael and his sister receive the surprise of a lifetime when Mary Poppins — the beloved nanny from their childhood — arrives to save the day and take the Banks family on a magical, fun-filled adventure.

How long is the Mary Poppins Returns runtime?

Mary Poppins Returns clocks in at two hours and ten minutes.

In comparison to some other major movies, like Avengers: Infinity War and Peterloo, Mary Poppins Returns is relatively quick.

Development on a sequel to the 1964 original Mary Poppins had been in the works for decades, since the release of the original Disney film.

Walt Disney himself tried to make a sequel in 1965, a year after the first movie’s release.

But Mary Poppins’ author P. L. Travers refused to allow it to come to fruition.

She notoriously dismissed Disney’s film adaptation, which was the subject of its own modern movie.

By the 1980s Jeffrey Katzenberg (then-chairman of Walt Disney Studios) and vice-president of live-action production Martin Kaplan approached Travers with the idea of a sequel which resembles the current film in plot.

However, the pair suggested Julie Andrews would reprise the role of Mary Poppins.

Travers rejected the proposal, except for the part about Julie Andrews returning to the role.

With such complications, Disney shortly gave up on their attempts to create a sequel.

Over two decades later, in 2015, Disney president Sean Bailey pitched a new Mary Poppins film to Rob Marshall, John DeLuca, and Marc E. Platt.

The above team were the producers behind the musical-based Into the Woods movie from 2014.

Disney finally received approval – though this time from Travers’ estate.

With this, production on Mary Poppins Returns began production on February 10, 2017.

Five months later, filming wrapped on the project and a release date was set for December 25, 2018.

In July 2018, however, the release date was moved up to December 19, 2018, in the USA.

Mary Poppins Returns is out in UK cinemas on December 21, 2018.
