With critics and fans alike raving about the prequel, it comes as no surprise people are setting the release date in their diaries. In the UK, Bumblebee is out in cinemas on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2018. Starring Hailee Steinfeld, John Cena, and a familiar voice cast, Bumblebee seems set to right the ship that is the Transformers franchise.
What is the Bumblebee age rating?
According to the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), Bumblebee is rated PG.
PG stands for Parental Guidance, which the BBFC describes as “General viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children.
“A PG film should not unsettle a child aged around eight or older.
“Unaccompanied children of any age may watch, but parents are advised to consider whether the content may upset younger, or more sensitive, children.”
For Bumblebee specifically, the BBFC lists several insights into its PG rating.
First up, BBFC makes note of the various scenes of Violence in the movie.
They write: “There are battles between the giant robots, in which they use powerful futuristic weapons and engage in hand-to-hand combat.
“The robots are occasionally damaged by weapons employed by human characters.
“There are additionally brief scenes in which humans are killed by robots, and which include men exploding in a shower of clear fluid.
“However, these scenes lack injury detail.”
Related to violence, though categorised separately is “injury detail” for which the BBFC says: “There is brief limited injury detail in scenes in which humans are cut and bruised following encounters with the giant robots.”
The next category for the PG rating is sex, though critics are already noting the shift in tone for Bumblebee in comparison to its predecessors.
The BBFC writes: “The film contains some mild sex references, including a scene in which a woman tells a man “You tried to sleep with my sister”, and the man replies “Unsuccessfully”.”
Mild bad language also contributed to the PG rating, including: ‘crap’, ‘balls’, ‘screwed’, ‘dumbass’, ‘freaking’, ‘damn’, and ‘hell’.
The BBFC adds: “In one scene, a mother wrongly suspects her young son’s behavioural change is due to the influence of drugs.
“There is also a brief comic scene in which a boy vomits following a chase scene.”
Bumblebee is out in UK cinemas on December 24, 2018.
