Bird Box on Netflix: NIGHTMARE scene reveals what the monster looks like

It’s been the sensation of the festive season. Rather than a cosy Christmas tale, everyone has been going crazy over terrifying alien monsters who make people commit suicide. Cheery stuff. The clever idea also means that the monsters are never shown, ostensibly because they manipulate their victims into seeing their greatest fears, therefore everyone sees something different. however, a scene was created and filmed where Sandra Bullock’s character Malorie took off her blindfold and faced one of the monsters.

The director Susanne Bier and screenwriter Eric Heisserer have admitted a lot of time was put into shooting a scene that was never used in the final cut.

Bier told Slash Film: “I pretty much feel that with creature movies, I pretty much kind of go – and they can be amazing, I recognize they are amazing – but there’s always a part of me that goes, ‘I’m not scared now. I’ve seen it.'”

One of the reasons it was deleted was the decision to always leave it to the audience’s imagination, but Bier and Bullock also revealed a more surprising reason. When the monster was created and shown to the crew and cast it did not have the expected reaction.

Bullock has even described exactly what she saw.

The actress said: “It was a green man with a horrific baby face. It was snake-like, and I was like, ‘I don’t want to see it when it first happens. Just bring it into the room. We’ll shoot the scene.’ I turn and he’s like this [growling at me.] It’s making me laugh. It was just a long fat baby.”

Bier confirmed the monster simply did not work: “The problem being it was a little bit funny.

“It’s pretty much always the case that you do shoot something which you think is crucial and hugely expensive and very necessary, and that is one of the things that goes. You can’t really present it. I think that is in the nature, in the DNA of moviemaking.”

BIer has also confirmed that whatever they created for that scene was never actually meant to be an accurate representation of one of the actual monsters. It was what Malorie imagined one might look like.

Bier said: “That was a nightmare… It wasn’t actually a creature.”
