The area recorded 101.7 victim-based crimes per 1,000 people. Greater Manchester with 98.6, Cleveland with 95.1 and South Yorkshire with 88.4 made up the top four blacklisted places to live. The report assessed crime across the five outlined crime categories – violent crime, robbery, sex offences, damage to property and theft of property.

Surprisingly London came 10th on the list with 81.4 offences per 1,000 despite the highest number of killings in the capital since 2008.

A total of 130 homicides were recorded in London this year, including 73 stabbings and 14 shootings.

Meanwhile the Home office found Dyfed-Powys in Wales was the safest place to live with 43.1 offences per 1,000 people.

Other rural areas including North Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Lincolnshire were also among the places with the lowest crime levels.

The findings are proportional to the amount of people living in each force’s area.

Meanwhile Kent has seen the biggest increase in violent crime with a 40 percent increase in knife crime from the previous year.

The development of the ’county lines’ crime networks is largely attributed to the rise.

‘County lines’ is where gangs move away major city’s to undergo their criminal activities. They often exploit children by using them to transport and sell their drugs into new areas.

Along with this new criminal act another new breed of moped thefts hit the capital with 19,000 attacks.

Overall, crime has increased across England and Wales by 10% in the past year.

Assistant Chief Constable Russ Foster of West Yorkshire Police, acknowledges the “real rises” in crime in the area and blames “the worst cuts to our budget” for the increase.

He told the Sun Online: “In West Yorkshire we promote a culture of ethical crime recording and have made significant improvements to enhance the integrity of our crime statistics which has influenced an increase in recorded crime.

“We as a force have experienced real rises in some areas of crime affecting our communities such as violence, burglary and robbery, similar to other forces nationally. Conversely we have seen a reduction in other areas of crime including vehicle crime and theft from the person.”

He added: “We have experienced some of the worst cuts to our budgets when compared to other forces nationally at a time when criminality is not only increasing, but evolving in terms of seriousness and complexity and at a time when we have seen unprecedented increases in calls for service to our 999 and 101 system.”

This shocking figures comes as Cressida Dick, the Metropolitan Police Commissioner warns a no-deal Brexit could see crime rise and put the “public at risk”.

The Met Chief told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “We will have to replace some of the things we currently use in terms of access to databases, the way in which we can quickly extradite and arrest people.

“We will have to replace them as effectively as we can, but it will be more costly, slower and potentially put the public at risk… There is no doubt about that.”
