Will there be a Bumblebee 2?

Monetarily, Paramount (the studio behind the Transformers series) may not want to risk another financial risk.

Bumblebee’s takings have nothing to do with its reception.

The film was released on December 21 in America, falling into competition with Aquaman, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, and Mary Poppins.

Though impressive, the Transformers prequel’s performance at the box office isn’t the kind of profit the studio may have been expecting from a blockbuster like Bumblebee.

However, Bumblebee’s universal acclaim warrants a sequel and movie-goers will likely turn out to see the yellow VW bug back in action.

Speaking to Cinema Blend, the director of Bumblebee Travis Knight teased he has ideas for a sequel.

He said: “When I get to the end of one of my movies, I always imagine what’s next for the characters.

“And so, in my mind, I’ve got all these scenarios and adventures that play out, both with Charlie and with Bee and everyone else.

“We’ll see if the world wants more. Maybe we’ll explore some of those things.”

Bumblebee’s writer Christina Hodson also has some ideas on where to take the story next.

In an interview with Variety, Hodson said: “I do. I know exactly what I wanna do with one.

“I don’t know if we’re gonna do it — we’ve got to see if audiences go and see this movie.

“But I know where I want to go with the next one.”

The story of Bumblebee reads: “On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee the Autobot seeks refuge in a junkyard in a small California beach town.

“Charlie, on the brink of turning 18 years old and trying to find her place in the world, soon discovers the battle-scarred and broken Bumblebee.

“When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns that this is no ordinary yellow Volkswagen.”

Charlie is played by Hailee Steinfeld, with John Cena as Jack Burns, a former U.S Army Ranger and agent of Sector 7.

Jorge Lendeborg Jr plays Memo, Charlie’s neighbour, with Dylan O’Brien as the voice of B-127 / Bumblebee and Peter Cullen reprising the role of the voice of Optimus Prime.

Bumblebee is now playing in cinemas.
