THESE are the most anticipated movies of 2019 – Does Captain Marvel make number one?
10. Joker (October 4)
The upcoming Warner Bros adaptation of DC Comics villain is on the list, if not for its promise at least out of curiosity’s sake.
Joaquin Phoenix stars in this iteration as a failed stand-up comedian in 1981, disregarded by the society that he lives in who turns to a life of crime and chaos in Gotham City.
9. Frozen 2 (November 22)
The sequel to the Disney sensation Frozen is hotly anticipated by kids and adults alike.
Frozen 2 once again stars Elsa (Indina Menzel) and Anna (Kristen Bell) in a “bigger, more epic” adventure, “going far out of Arendelle” according to co-director Jennifer Lee.
8. Glass (January 18)
Whatever your feelings about M Night Shyamalan, it’s hard not to get excited by the third in the series of psycho-thrillers.
James Mcavoy’s Split set the foundation for the universe in which fan-favourite Unbreakable took place, and now all three protagonists (Bruce Willis and Samuel L Jackson) are back.
7. Shazam! (April 5)
With Wonder Woman, Aquaman has helped to right the ship that is the Warner Bros adaptation of DC Comics superheroes, and Shazam has benefited from this.
The story of Shazam follows a streetwise 14-year-old foster kid Billy Batson (Asher Angel) who, by shouting out the word SHAZAM! can turn into an adult Super Hero Shazam (Zachary Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard (Djimon Hounsou).
6. Spider-Man: Far From Home (July 5)
Marvel has only three movies coming up this year, and they all make the list.
Spider-Man: Far From Home sees Tom Holland’s Spidey headed to Europe on a trip, joining forces with Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio.
5. Us (March 15)
Jordan Peele is back in cinemas with his much-anticipated horror film, Us which follows mom Adelaide (Lupita Nyong’o) and dad Gabe (Winston Duke) who take their kids to their beach house expecting to unplug and unwind with friends.
The synopsis reads: “But as night descends, their serenity turns to tension and chaos when some shocking visitors arrive uninvited.”
4. Dark Phoenix (June 7)
Originally set for release in 2018, the fourth movie in the X-Men prequel series is set in 1992, a decade after the events of X-Men Apocalypse.
A sort-of remake of X-Men The Last Stand, this film sees Jean Grey lose control of her powers and become the Phoenix.
3, 2, and 1, in no particular order:
Avengers: Endgame (April 26)
The sequel to last year’s earth-shattering Avengers Infinity War may just break the box office in 2019.
With half the universe dead after Thanos’ Snap, the surviving Avengers will have to team up with Captain Marvel to resurrect the dead, but how?
Captain Marvel (March 8)
Brie Larson stars as Carol Danvers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first female-led solo movie.
Set in 1995, Captain Marvel joins forces with Samuel L Jackson’s Nick Fury to take on the Skrull.
Star Wars Episode IX (December 19)
Star Wars Episode IX, still untitled, marks the end of an era of heroes we all know and love – Luke, Leia, and Han.
Episode IX sees JJ Abrams return to the directing chair in the wake of Rian Johnson’s controversial The Last Jedi.
Will Rey and the resistance triumph over Kylo Ren? Fans are waiting with bated breath for more details, like the title and trailer, and to see a glimpse of the late, great Carrie Fisher via previously unused footage in her last ever role.
