Golden Globes 2019: Why are stars wearing ribbons and bracelets? Is it for Time’s Up?

Last year, the red carpet saw a “black out” – with the majority of attendees choosing to wear black. The move was in support of the campaign Time’s Up – a movement against sexual harassment. Time’s Up was launched last year, on January 1, by a number of Hollywood stars. Tonight, attendees at the Golden Globes 2019 have not followed a dress code in order to stand in solidarity with the movement, however they have been able to back the movement in a different way.

As they posed in view of the world’s media tonight, a number of stars could be seen making a nod at the movement.

For example, actor Edgar Ramirez wore a black bracelet on his wrist, which read: “Time’s Up.”

Meanwhile, actress D’Arcy Carden held a white “Time’s Up x2″ tag.

Olivia Colman also held a similar ribbon as she paused for photographs.

The actress held a black version which had been emblazoned with the name in white writing, which had been attached to her black clutch bag.

Fellow Golden Globe Awards nominee Yvonne Strahovski could be seen with a long Time’s Up x2 ribbon in her right hand.

The ribbons were designed by Arianne Phillips, who created last year’s Time’s Up pins – which were worn at the same ceremony last year.

Having recently embarked on its second year, the “x2” aspect marks its recent anniversary.

What’s more, it also makes a call for doubling the number of women who are in positions of leadership across industries.

Earlier this week, Debra Messing, 50, explained the campaign’s next steps.

As part of a lengthy Instagram post, the Will & Grace star penned: “Sexual harassment stems from an inbalance of power.

“Issues of workplace safety for women, and especially for women of colour, are but a symptom of the power inbalance that plagues nearly every sector.”(sic)

She continued: “We won’t stop fighting until there is gender balance in leadership and all women have opportunity to reach their full potential at work.”

During the Golden Globes 2019, Regina King dedicated part of her acceptance speech for best supporting actress in a film to the cause.

She said: “I’m going to use my platform to say that in the next two years, I am making a vow and, it’s going to be tough, to make sure that everything I produce is 50 percent women.

“I challenge everyone out there who is in a position of power, not just in our industry but in all industries, I challenge you to challenge yourselves and stand with us in solidarity and do the same.”
