Last night the 37-year-old beat favourite Bradley Cooper to the Golden Globe for Best Drama Actor. The win was something of a surprise, with A Star Is Born having been nominated for five awards. Nevertheless, there’s little doubt that both Malek and Cooper will be nominated for the Best Actor Oscar on January 22. And looking at the evidence, the win looks a shoo-in for Bohemian Rhapsody’s Freddie Mercury star and here’s why.

Golden Globe Best Drama Actor winners take home the Best Actor Oscar

The Golden Globes kick off awards season each year and give a good idea of who is likely to win Oscars across the categories.

And every year since 2013, the actor who won Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama, has won the Best Actor Oscar.

With Cooper’s snub, this looks like Malek is now heading for Oscars glory.

Rami Malek played a historical figure

When it comes to awards season voting; if an actor has played a famous historical figure they usually win Best Actor across most of the ceremonies.

Take last year when Gary Oldman won an Oscar for playing Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour.

Or a few years ago when Sir Daniel Day-Lewis won for Lincoln, Meryl Streep for Margaret Thatcher and Colin Firth for King George VI.

And Malek’s just starred as the iconic Freddie Mercury, although this year there is some competition from Christian Bale.

Yes, in the other male acting category, Bale won for playing Dick Cheney in Vice, beating John C Reilly’s Oliver Hardy. No doubt the Best Actor Oscar will be between Bale and Malek, but the latter has the upper hand.

Firstly, he won in the Golden Globe drama category which usually wins the Oscar, but also Mercury has a hero narrative behind him as Queen singer and a gay icon.

While Cheney’s depiction is that of a villain. After all, Bale controversially thanked Satan for inspiration in playing the former US Vice President in Vice.

Whatever happens, Malek deserves the Oscar for his sensational performance as Freddie – one that will be remembered for years to come, while perhaps other recent nominees will not.
