The Queen and Freddie Mercury biopic, starring Rami Malek, has proven a runaway success despite lukewarm reviews. And last night, it not only won Malek a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture (Drama), it also scooped Best Motion Picture – Drama, arguably the biggest prize of the night. It’s also still doing very well at cinemas – particularly in the UK.

In fact, almost three months on from its October release, the film has surpassed one of the most prolific and inescapable movies of the last year.

According to Screen Daily, over the weekend it increased its gross week-on-weel by 10%, adding £724,000 to its impressive total.

That means its UK gross now sits at £48.4m – and it’s overtaken the phenomenon that is The Greatest Showman.

The sleeper-hit musical, starring Hugh Jackman, accrued £48 million during its run in British cinemas.

Top of the UK box office chart was, once again, Mary Poppins Returns; which piled on another £4.6 million over the Friday-Sunday period, taking it up to £34.3 million total domestically.

The Favourite entered strongly at No2 with £2.2 million, taking its total up to £4 million including London previews and its screenings since New Year’s Day.

It’s already director Yorgos Lanthimos’ highest-grossing effort in this country, and its success is likely to continue amid strong buzz for its performances – especially Golden Globes winner and Oscars contender Olivia Colman.

Aquaman logged third place with £1.9 million; elevating its UK total to £18.3 million.

And the special concert event, André Rieu’s 2019 New Year Concert In Sydney (Piece Of Magic), managed £1.7 million.

Bumblebee rounded off the Top 5 with an extra £1.7 million, taking its total in this territory to £9.1 million.

Its box office has been a little quieter internationally when compared to previous Transformers films, but there’s no such concern here: it will soon beat Transformers: The Last Night, which took £9.5 million in this country.

Finally, Welcome To Marwen – the huge US flop starring Steve Carrell – has also tanked in the United Kingdom – managing £241,713 since its release on New Year’s Day.
