Star Wars 9: Mark Hamill INSISTED Rian Johnson changed THIS Last Jedi scene
Hamill has always hinted at certain issues he has with the Sequel Trilogy. These have often been seized upon by fans involved in the backlash against the Disney films under Kathleen Kennedy. In a latest round of interviews to promote his role on The History Channel’s Knightfall , the actor has spoken openly about working on The Last Jedi with Rian Johnson. Although he has come to accept his differences with his director’s vision, he revealed he put his foot down over one particular scene.
The Star Wars legend said: “I made a vow – I said that I’m not going to talk about the movies anymore because I think it’s important for the audience to see them.”
He then immediately talked about the films and one particular part of that climactic scene when he appears on Crait and is reunited with so many old friends.
Hamill said: “They had me walking by 3PO, not even acknowledging him. I said: ‘I can’t do that!’ He (Rian Johnson) said, ‘Okay, go over and do whatever.’ So I went over, and I did whatever.”
The actor might be being flippant but it seems extraordinary that the director would not appreciate how those two characters would act in that moment, based on their long and very well documnetd history.
STAR WARS: MARK HAMILL BLASTS THE TWO BIGGEST ‘MISTAKES’ IN THE SEQUEL TRILOGY
This highlights one of the main complaints from many fans that Episode 8 in particular does a disservice to the iconic legancy characters from the previous trilogies. Not only do many fans feel the movie sidelines and diminishes some of those characters, it also fails to understand their very essence and its importance to the existence of the franchise in the first place.
Hamill’s next comments hone in on that famous phrase that sums up the reason why there was such a split in the fandom: “They say it in the script: ‘Forget the past, kill it if you have to,’ and they’re doing a pretty good job!”
The problem has always been that many fans do not wish to see the past, forty years of movies and memories, forgotten or killed.
Hamill, though, continues to try to be philosophical about it all.
He adde: “Listen, I never expected to come back. We had a beginning, a middle, and an end. That’s what I said: ‘Why mess with it?’
“It’s not something that worries me, because it’s all about the new generation, as it should be.”
Many would disagree, but all will hope that Episode 9 gives a fitting finale to the story of Luke Skywalker.
