Midsommar trailer: DISTURBING new horror from Hereditary director – WATCH
Last summer Aster’s directorial debut Hereditary launched and saw incredible critical and box office success. Hailed a five-star masterpiece by some, the terrifying horror is now being followed up by another freaky tale. Produced by A24 and directed by Aster once again, comes Midsommar (Swedish for Midsummer) and the first trailer is really bizarre and intriguing. The film’s synopsis reads: “A couple travels to Sweden to visit their friend’s rural hometown for its fabled mid-summer festival.”
It adds: “What begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult.”
The film stars Jack Reynor, Florence Pugh and Will Poulter in the disturbing first look.
Not much can be divulged, but it can no doubt be said that the unsuspecting couple is not going to get the Glastonbury experience they might have been hoping for.
Last year Aster revealed that Hereditary’s original cut was set to be three hours long.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Ari Aster admitted 30 scenes were left out for pacing reasons.
He said: “The movie tells you what it needs to be. This was the best version of the movie.
“But the part of you that mourns the missing scenes, tells you to announce that it was three-hours long.”
“In the original cut, and in the script, the audience was forced to really stew.”

He added: “The breakdown of communication was chronicled in more pummelling detail.”
Despite Hereditary’s success, the film was all but ignored during Oscars season.
Midsommar is released in UK cinemas on August 16, 2019
