Captain Marvel: Will ‘review bombing’ and Brie Larson troll backlash hurt box office?
Now, the reviews are out in the open.
Captain Marvel currently has an 82% score on Rotten Tomatoes – with the vast majority of critiques being positive, if not quite euphoric.
Compared to previous Marvel movies, the film is joint 13th out of 21; ranked solely by aggregated Rotten Tomatoes score.
Now, focus turns to the box office. How will the movie be affected?
According to the early indicators, hardly at all.
Deadline reported late last night that the film was en route to a $20-$24 million US haul based on Thursday previews alone.
Those are only estimates, of course, and Disney’s final number will likely be slightly higher or lower.
But in any case, the movie will likely trail Batman v. Superman for the second-best March preview night of all time.
It’s higher than the first preview day for other female-fronted blockbusters such as Hunger Games ($19.7 million) and Wonder Woman ($11 million), even if it is slightly below the likes of Black Panther ($25.2 million).
Interestingly that latter movie also faced an effort by trolls to disrupt its box office appeal.
The weekend is far from over, of course – and Captain Marvel’s performance could still exceed or fail to meet expectations over the coming days depending on word-of-mouth.
But as things stand, signs point towards a triumphant bow for Carol Danvers.
Captain Marvel is out now.
