Wonder Woman 1984: Wonder Woman 2 is NOT a sequel says film producer
Wonder Woman 1984 sees Gal Gadot return as the eponymous superhero in June 2020. The first Wonder Woman movie was credited with changing the direction of Warner Bros’ DC Comics adaptations. Since then, Warner Bros is catching up to Marvel with the success of Aquaman and the anticipation for the upcoming Shazam.
Despite Wonder Woman 1984’s jump forward in time, its producer Charles Roven has reframed what the second film is.
Speaking to Vulture, Roven said Wonder Woman’s director Patty Jenkins was: “determined that this movie should be the next iteration of Wonder Woman but not a sequel.
“And she’s definitely delivering on that. It’s a completely different time frame and you’ll get a sense of what Diana-slash–Wonder Woman had been doing in the intervening years.
“But it’s a completely different story that we’re telling.
“Even though it’ll have a lot of the same emotional things, a lot of humour, a lot of brave action.
“Tugs at the heartstrings as well,” Roven added.
Of course, Wonder Woman 1984 is for all intents and purposes the very definition of a sequel.
The film picks up years later with the same characters.
However, a source close to Jenkins told Vulture: “It’s a stand-alone film in the same way that Indiana Jones or Bond films are, instead of one continuous story that requires many instalments.”
This may be a hard pill to swallow for fans expecting a satisfying denouement between Chris Pine’s character in Wonder Woman 1984 and Diana Prince.
The only plot details released so far read: “Wonder Woman squares off against the Cheetah (Kristen Wiig), a villainess who possesses superhuman strength and agility.”
In addition to Gadot, Pine, and Wiig, the cast also includes:
Connie Nielsen reprising her role as Hippolyta, the queen of Themyscira and Diana’s mother.
Robin Wright returns as Antiope, Hippolyta’s sister, general of the Amazonian army and Diana’s aunt.
WONDER WOMAN: IS GAL GADOT PRODUCING A MOVIE ABOUT FIDEL CASTRO?
Kelvin Yu (Master of None) as Jake, Lyon Beckwith as Buzz, and Oakley Bull (Beautiful Boy) as Kelly.
Pedro Pascal (Triple Frontier), Ryan L. Price, Natasha Rothwell (Insecure), Ravi Patel (Meet The Patels), Gabriella Wilde (Poldark), and Kristoffer Polaha (Life Unexpected) have all been cast in as of yet unnamed roles.
Wonder Woman was previously scheduled to be released on December 13, 2019.
The film was then moved to November 1, 2019, finally landing on its current release date.
Wonder Woman 1984 is out in UK cinemas on June 5, 2020.
