Grease prequel movie confirmed: BACKLASH as fans rage over ‘Danny and Sandy origin story’

The iconic musical is still adored by millions worldwide, and yesterday it was revealed that a prequel story is in the works.

The film will take place in the summer before Danny and Sandy – originally played by John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John – were reunited at Rydell High.

Essentially, it seems like it’ll be a whole film made out of the lyrics of the song Summer Nights.

It’s called Summer Loving, and the silver lining is that a very qualified writer is on script duties: John August, who has previously penned Big Fish and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

“The entire lore of Sandy and Danny in Grease is that you don’t know exactly what happened that summer smh,” one person tweeted; referencing the character’s slightly different versions of events in Summer Nights.

“you don’t need a Grease prequel there’s literally a whole song that already explains it!!!” posted someone else.

A third tweeted: “…But, it was shown in the beginning of Grease…there’s no reason to have a prequel.”

Another user quipped: “If I’m going by the lyrics to Summer Lovin, a Grease prequel is basically just a porno.”

Many users said that, if a Grease prequel were to be made, it should focus on iconic supporting character Rizzo rather than Danny and Sandy.

“We already have the song. The song spells it all out. GIVE US THE RIZZO PREQUEL WE DESERVE,” said one person, adding hilariously: “Stockard Channing to play teenage Rizzo.”

“The only prequel I want is one of Rizzo!!!” said another.

A third said: “Can we not have a Grease prequel about Rizzo where she shows the world how she came to be such a badass b***h.”

Released in 1978 and based on the 1971 musical, Grease is an all-time great in terms of cultural impact and continued appeal.

A sequel, Grease 2, was released in 1982 with Maxwell Caulfield and Michelle Pfeiffer; grossing just $15 million (the original made $40 million in just nineteen days).

Its soundtrack is also iconic: songs include You’re The One That I Want, Sandy, Hopelessly Devoted To You and We Go Together.
