Star Wars 9: Mark Hamill did NOT want THIS to happen 'But they never listen'

The latest trilogy has frequently divided fans over some controversial choices made by the directors. The Last Jedi certainly ignited a headline-grabbing backlash which unfortunately spilled into extremely distasteful attacks on some of the cast. One man who has escaped any criticism is Mark Hamill. He is also the only star who has constantly hinted and occasionally directly expressed some of his own concerns regarding the final chapters of the Skywalker Saga. In a major new interview, he reveals the one scene he fought to change and how powerless he sometimes feels in the Sequel Trilogy.

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Hamill also talked about the worry that cinema-goers might have had enough of Star Wars and his own struggles working with a new team of directors and creators who have such a  different view of the franchise and its legacy.

The actor said with a sigh: “It has certainly been challenging… I’m not gonna tell them how to run their business, but is there a possibility of ‘Star Wars fatigue’? Yeah, I think there is. I’ve experienced it, to a certain degree.”

He remains undeniably devoted to the franchise and clearly still feels passionate about maintaining its integrity and continuity.

He made no secret of his disappointment that he was held off-screen until the closing seconds of The Force Awakens. He has also struggled to conceal his frustrations with The Last Jedi and its credo of “the past must die.”

But the scene he most wanted to change also had a more personal resonance for him. Hamill admitted: “Everyone talks about the shock of realizing that on Force Awakens I don’t come in until the last page. A bigger shock to me was them killing Han Solo before Luke could ever see his best friend again.”

The actor revealed he lobbied director JJ Abrams to do it differently: “But they get the keys to the kingdom, and they’re the deciders, so you just have to live with it.”

Although,

Hamill has never been the kind of person to “just live with it” as his politically and socially charged Twitter page attests.

Although he is generally always in good spirits, he doesn’t hide his thwarted desire to have a little more say in the galaxy he helped create.

Ultimately, though, he concedes: “They never listen to my ideas anyway, so who needs ’em?!”
