Bohemian Rhapsody: Freddie Mercury biopic crosses THIS huge milestone after Oscars glory

The Queen movie was the biggest winner at this year’s Academy Awards, taking home four Oscars. Having recently crossed $900 million at the worldwide box office, Bohemian Rhapsody is now storming ahead in home release sales. According to the Official Film Chart, the Freddie Mercury biopic is the biggest-selling film of 2019 on home release in the UK so far. To date, Bohemian Rhapsody has sold more than 1.1 million copies on disc and download since it came out on February 16.

In comparison, Tom Hardy’s Venom is currently in second place, followed by A Star Is Born, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and The Greatest Showman.

Interestingly four movies in the Top 10 are musicals, with Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, also featuring in seventh place.

Clearly, the British public are fans of a singalong, so perhaps there’s high hopes for the upcoming Elton John biopic Rocketman this summer.

Last month, Bohemian Rhapsody achieved four weeks at No 1 in the chart. In fact, it outsold the rest of the Top 5 in total that week.

Bohemian Rhapsody also managed to break The Greatest Showman’s home release record.

The Queen movie sold almost half a million discs in its first week of physical release and over 388,000 digital sales in its first four weeks in the chart.

In terms of total sales though, Bohemian Rhapsody had sold 853,000 copies to The Greatest Showman’s 845,500 in the same month-long time frame.

Following the film’s huge success, it’s unsurprising that a sequel is likely to be in the works.

Speaking to Page Six, Queen music video director Rudi Dolezal fanned the fire of a sequel rumour.

Dolezal said of Jim Beach, Queen’s manager: “I’m sure he plans a sequel that starts with Live Aid.”

He added a sequel is “being heavily discussed in the Queen family.”

Queen guitarist Brian May has also said “there might be a sequel.”
