Easter 2019 movies: Fun and FREE movies to watch on TV this bank holiday weekend
This weekend is four days long with the Easter bank holiday approaching. Some might be stuck for ideas of things to do from the comfort of your home. We’ve rounded up a list of great movies to watch on TV for free, presuming you have a TV license.
Flushed Away at 10am on BBC2
After an ignoble landing in Ratropolis, a pampered rodent (Hugh Jackman) enlists the help of a sewer scavenger (Kate Winslet) in finding his way back to his posh London flat.
Getting home is not the only problem, however; a rodent-hating toad (Ian McKellen) wants his notorious cousin, Le Frog (Jean Reno), to exterminate the pair.
The Parent Trap at 11:45am on Channel 4
In this update of a 1961 film, twins Annie and Hallie (Lindsay Lohan) are strangers until happenstance unites them.
The preteen girls’ divorced parents, Nick (Dennis Quaid) and Elizabeth (Natasha Richardson), are living on opposite sides of the Atlantic, each with one child.
After meeting at camp, American Hallie and British-raised Annie engineer an identity swap, giving both the chance to spend time with the parent they’ve missed.
If the scheme works, it might just make the family whole again.
Mr Bean’s Holiday is available to watch on TV this Easter weekend
Mr Bean’s Holiday at 3:20pm on Channel 5
Mr Bean (Rowan Atkinson) is going on holiday to the south of France, looking for a quiet and sunny trip in the Riviera.
However, his trip doesn’t go as smoothly as he expected when he has to face a series of misunderstandings and totally unfortunate coincidences.
Eventually, Mr Bean will end up spoiling the last film of the snobbish director Carson Clay and appearing by accident at the Cannes Film Festival.
Hop at 5:10pm on ITV2
Beneath Easter Island, in a giant factory that manufactures the world’s Easter candy, the popular rabbit is preparing to pass the mantle to his son, EB (Russell Brand).
But EB has no interest in the job and would rather be a drummer. He runs away to Los Angeles, where an unemployed slacker named Fred O’Hare (James Marsden) accidentally runs into him.
Feigning injury, EB tricks Fred into giving him shelter, but an oversized chick is planning a coup back on Easter Island.
Liar Liar at 7:15pm on ITV2
Conniving attorney Fletcher Reede (Jim Carrey) is an ace in the courtroom, but his dishonesty and devotion to work ruin his relationships.
His wife, Audrey (Maura Tierney), has left him for a more dependable man, and Fletcher often breaks the commitments he makes to his beloved son, Max (Justin Cooper).
When Max wishes his dad would stop lying for 24 hours, Fletcher suddenly finds that he can only speak the truth – on the day his career-deciding court case has to be won.
Dr Strange at 8:30pm on ITV
Dr Stephen Strange’s (Benedict Cumberbatch) life changes after a car accident robs him of the use of his hands.
When traditional medicine fails him, he looks for healing, and hope, in a mysterious enclave.
He quickly learns that the enclave is at the front line of a battle against unseen dark forces bent on destroying reality.
Before long, Strange is forced to choose between his life of fortune and status or leave it all behind to defend the world as the most powerful sorcerer in existence.

Kubo and the Two Strings at 12:30pm on Channel 4
Young Kubo’s (Art Parkinson) peaceful existence comes crashing down when he accidentally summons a vengeful spirit from the past.
Now on the run, Kubo joins forces with Monkey (Charlize Theron) and Beetle (Matthew McConaughey) to unlock a secret legacy.
Armed with a magical instrument, Kubo must battle the Moon King (Ralph Fiennes) and other gods and monsters to save his family and solve the mystery of his fallen father, the greatest samurai warrior the world has ever known.
Alice in Wonderland: Tim Burton’s remake will be played on TV over the bank holiday weekend
Lord of The Rings: The Return of The King at 5:25pm on ITV2
The culmination of nearly 10 years’ work and conclusion to Peter Jackson’s epic trilogy based on the timeless JRR Tolkien classic, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King presents the final confrontation between the forces of good and evil fighting for control of the future of Middle-earth.
Hobbits Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin) reach Mordor in their quest to destroy the ‘one ring’, while Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) leads the forces of good against Sauron’s evil army at the stone city of Minas Tirith.
Alice in Wonderland at 6:50pm on BBC 2
A young girl when she first visited magical Underland, Alice Kingsleigh (Mia Wasikowska) is now a teenager with no memory of the place – except in her dreams.
Her life takes a turn for the unexpected when, at a garden party for her fiancé and herself, she spots a certain white rabbit and tumbles down a hole after him.
Reunited with her friends the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp), the Cheshire Cat and others, Alice learns it is her destiny to end the Red Queen’s (Helena Bonham Carter) reign of terror.
Ted 2: The movie about a talking teddy bear is not for youngters
The Fast and The Furious at 10:35pm on ITV
Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) is forced to come out of hiding when a loved one is brutally murdered.
Heading to LA to track down the culprit, he crosses paths with Brian O’Connor (Paul Walker), the FBI agent whose undercover infiltration of Toretto’s gang led to the motorised miscreant’s exile across the border.
The two men temporarily put their differences aside as they investigate the killing.
Ted 2 at 10:40pm on Channel 4
Life has changed drastically for thunder buddies John (Mark Wahlberg), now a bachelor, and best pal Ted (Seth MacFarlane), now married to the woman (Jessica Barth) of his dreams.
Problems arise when the couple decide to adopt a child, but the law declares Ted to be property and not a person.
Angry and dejected, the lovably foulmouthed teddy bear must now seek legal help from a young lawyer (Amanda Seyfried) and a legendary, civil-rights attorney (Morgan Freeman) to get the justice he deserves.
Puss in Boots: The family friendly Shrek prequel movie is on TV

Long before meeting Shrek, Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) – just named a hero for saving a woman from a charging bull – is run out of town on suspicion of bank robbery, even though the real villain is Puss’ friend, Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis).
Though there is still animosity between them, Puss and Humpty reunite to steal a goose that lays golden eggs.
Joining them for the adventure of nine lifetimes is notorious cat burglar, Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek).
Saving Mr Banks at 3:40pm on BBC1
Spurred on by a promise he made to his daughters, Walt Disney (Tom Hanks) embarks on what would become a 20-year quest to obtain the movie rights to ‘Mary Poppins.’
The author, PL Travers (Emma Thompson), proves to be an uncompromising curmudgeon who has no intention of letting her beloved characters become mangled in the Hollywood machine.
However, when the books stop selling and she finds herself in need of money, Travers reluctantly agrees to consider Disney’s proposition.
Marley & Me at 4:50pm on Channel 5
Newlyweds John and Jenny Grogan (Owen Wilson, Jennifer Aniston) leave behind snowy Michigan and move to Florida, where they buy their first home and find jobs at competing newspapers.
Soon afterward, the Grogans adopt Marley, an adorable yellow Labrador pup.
But Marley soon grows up to be a mischievous handful. Still, even while he’s destroying the furniture and failing obedience school, he always manages to bring out the best in John, Jenny and their growing family.
Jurassic Park at 7:20pm on ITV2
In Steven Spielberg’s massive blockbuster, paleontologists Alan Grant (Sam Neill) and Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) and mathematician Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) are among a select group chosen to tour an island theme park populated by dinosaurs created from prehistoric DNA.
While the park’s mastermind, billionaire John Hammond (Richard Attenborough), assures everyone that the facility is safe, they find out otherwise when various ferocious predators break free and go on the hunt.
The Wolverine: The Hugh Jackman movie is on TV to watch this weekend
The Wolverine at 9pm on Film 4
Lured to a Japan he hasn’t seen since World War II, century-old mutant Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) finds himself in a shadowy realm of yakuza and samurai.
Wolverine is pushed to his physical and emotional brink when he is forced to go on the run with a powerful industrialist’s daughter (Tao Okamoto) and is confronted — for the first time — with the prospect of death.
As he struggles to rediscover the hero within himself, he must grapple with powerful foes and the ghosts of his own haunted past.
The King’s Speech at 9:30pm on Sony Movie Channel
England’s Prince Albert (Colin Firth) must ascend the throne as King George VI, but he has a speech impediment.
Knowing that the country needs her husband to be able to communicate effectively, Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter) hires Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush), an Australian actor and speech therapist, to help him overcome his stammer.
An extraordinary friendship develops between the two men, as Logue uses unconventional means to teach the monarch how to speak with confidence.

Clash of the Titans at 1:15pm on Channel 5
Perseus (Sam Worthington), the son of Zeus (Liam Neeson), is caught in a war between gods and is helpless to save his family from Hades (Ralph Fiennes), the god of the underworld.
With nothing left to lose, Perseus leads a band of warriors on a dangerous quest to prevent Hades from overthrowing the king of the gods and laying waste to Earth.
Matilda at 2:55pm on Sony Movie Channel
This film adaptation of a Roald Dahl work tells the story of Matilda Wormwood (Mara Wilson), a gifted girl forced to put up with a crude, distant father (Danny DeVito) and mother (Rhea Perlman).
Worse, Agatha Trunchbull (Pam Ferris), the evil principal at Matilda’s school, is a terrifyingly strict bully.
However, when Matilda realizes she has the power of telekinesis, she begins to defend her friends from Trunchbull’s wrath and fight back against her unkind parents.
Jason and the Argonauts at 3:35pm on Channel 5
After saving the life of his royal father’s usurper, Pelias (Douglas Wilmer), whom he fails to recognize, Jason (Todd Armstrong) is encouraged by the conniving murderer to begin a quest in search of the Golden Fleece.
In doing so, Pelias hopes for Jason’s death to thwart the prophecy that he will reclaim the throne.
Along the journey, Jason is protected by the goddess Hera (Honor Blackman), and his crew includes Hercules (Nigel Green) and Acastus (Gary Raymond), a saboteur planted by Pelias.
Paddington at 4:35pm on Film 4
After a deadly earthquake destroys his home in Peruvian rainforest, a young bear (Ben Whishaw) makes his way to England in search of a new home.
The bear, dubbed ‘Paddington’ for the London train station, finds shelter with the family of Henry (Hugh Bonneville) and Mary Brown (Sally Hawkins).
Although Paddington’s amazement at urban living soon endears him to the Browns, someone else has her eye on him: Taxidermist Millicent Clyde (Nicole Kidman) has designs on the rare bear and his hide.
Notting Hill: The classic rom-com is the perfect way to end a bank holiday weekend
The Social Network at 9pm on the Paramount Network Channel 5
In 2003, Harvard undergrad and computer genius Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) begins work on a new concept that eventually turns into the global social network known as Facebook.
Six years later, he is one of the youngest billionaires ever, but Zuckerberg finds that his unprecedented success leads to both personal and legal complications when he ends up on the receiving end of two lawsuits, one involving his former friend (Andrew Garfield).
