Avengers Endgame: Stan Lee's FINAL cameo gives HEARTWARMING farewell to Marvel creator

Avengers: Endgame features the final cameo from Stan Lee, Marvel’s auteur. The comic book creator died on November 12, 2018, at the age of 95. Lee is beloved the world around, and fans were more than curious to see how Avengers: Endgame would bid farewell to its creator. Warning: there are MAJOR spoilers for Avengers: Endgame below.

What was Stan Lee’s cameo?

Stan Lee is featured slightly de-aged, driving down a highway in the New Jersey sun in 1970.

Beside him is a woman, and as they drive past a military base, Lee shouts out of the window: “Hey man, make love not war,” and drives off into the sunset.

To understand how Lee’s cameo makes sense, one has to know a bit about the plot of Avengers: Endgame.

The present day (2023) Avengers are planning to travel back in time to steal the Infinity Stones.

They break up into teams to go to different points in time, including 2012 and the battle of New York.

Captain America, Professor Hulk, Iron Man, and Ant-Man all go to New York, with the Hulk going to get the Time Stoen from the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton).

Meanwhile, Iron-Man, and Ant-Man attempt to get the Space Stone but fail.

Loki escapes with it, and Iron-Man and Captain America decide to travel further back in time to 1970s New Jersey to take the Space Stone from the military base Camp Lehigh.

Lee’s cameo at this moment is poignant for many reasons.

The woman beside him in the car is thought to be a ‘young’ version of Lee’s wife Joan, who died in 2017.

Lee himself was sympathetic to counter-culture ideals, and tended to write positive protestors and activists characters.

To see him, beside his wife, driving off into the sunset was a heartwarming and fitting send off to the beloved comics creator.

Joe Russo told RadioTimes: “Obviously it was exceedingly sad that this cameo was his final appearance, but I do think what was shot was very fitting.”

Though Lee will not appear himself in any more Marvel movies, fans suspect his cameos will take on other forms.

In Deadpool 2 Lee did not appear but instead, a huge graffiti mural of his face featured prominently.

This is likely how his legacy will live on in the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Not to mention in the beloved characters he helped create, and the undying love fans have for him.
