Bohemian Rhapsody: Freddie movie makes MILLIONS for Mary Austin and Queen
Six months after release and the Freddie Mercury Queen biopic continues to smash box office records. After passing $900million (£698million) worldwide, the movie is easily the biggest music film, biopic AND drama of all time. Considering it was made on an impressively small budget, this also means a huge payday for everyone involved. Queen icons Brian May and Roger Taylor were closely involved with the production but an agreement made when the band reunited means all Queen-related revenues are split four ways.
A major report revealed all Queen-related profits have been split four ways ever since Freddie’s death.
Freddie never married and accepted his homosexuality later in life, but he openly declared one woman was “the love of my love.” The music legend called Mary Austin his “common-law wife” and their devotion continued beyond his death.
Freddie left her the bulk of his fortune, including this palatial West Kensington home. He also left her a major share of future Queen earnings.
BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY: MARY AUSTIN REVEALS HOW AND WHY SHE HID FREDDIE’S ASHES
Bohemian Rhapsody was made for £38million, a tiny amount by Hollywood standards, so the £698million haul means a huge profit.
The studio is expected to bank half of the profits after marketing and distribution costs which leaves an incredible windfall for the three surviving members of Queen, as well as Freddie’s main beneficiary, Mary.
The three surviving members of Queen – Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon – stand to make around £75million each.
Freddie’s share used to be split 50/50 between Mary and his family. Following the deaths of both his parents, Mary also receives their share, leaving the remaining 25% to the star’s sister, Kashmira Cook. This means Mary Austin could make around £55million.
These figures don’t even take into account the huge home entertainment revenues since the film was released on February 1 this year. Sales in the US alone are estimated at $50million.
The film’s global success also generated another surge in album sales which will bring in yet more millions.
Mary continues to live at Garden Lodge, Kensington while his sister is currently selling her London penthouse at Hyde Park Gardens to join family in Nottingham.
