Avengers Endgame: What was with THIS change for Captain Marvel in Endgame?
When the first Avengers: Endgame trailer was released, many fans took issue with a big change for Captain Marvel. In the trailer, Carol Danvers (played by Brie Larson) was wearing makeup – a far cry from her au naturale look in her Captain Marvel solo movie. Though the Russo brothers explained the change, there was another change fans were not ready for. Warning: spoilers ahead for Avengers: Endgame.
What was with Captain Marvel’s haircut?
At the end of Avengers: Endgame, as the final battle rages, Captain Marvel joins the fray.
Fans noticed one huge change for the character, however: her hair was short.
Not just shoulder length short but almost-pixie cut short; a big change from her previous look.
But the short hair was not just a decision made willy-nilly by the Russo brothers.
AVENGERS ENDGAME LEAK: CAN YOU BE JAILED FOR WATCHING ONLINE?
The big chop is actually part of Captain Marvel’s character development in the comics.
In Captain Marvel’s solo movie, set in the 1990s, she has long hair parted in the middle.
This is reminiscent of her comic debut in which she emulated writer Gloria Steinem.
With Captain Marvel’s reboot in 2012, she was given a shorter military style haircut to reflect taking on the role as defender of many worlds throughout the universe.
AVENGERS ENDGAME: MARVEL GIVES FEMALE FANS MAJOR NOD – IS IT ENOUGH?
In the five years between Endgame’s opening moments and the final battle, Captain Marvel obviously got her hair cut.
This hints Captain Marvel 2 may be set sometime in between her solo outing in the 1990s and Endgame, which takes place in 2023.
Many fans have championed the look as something that, to quote Den of Geek “screams queer visibility.”
Danvers’ sexuality is not explicitly discussed in the comics.
AVENGERS ENDGAME SPOILERS: IS THIS CHARACTER ACTUALLY ALIVE?
However, Larson and co-star Tessa Thompson have given their approval of fans’ “shipping” Captain Marvel and Valkyrie, a pairing colloquially known as ValCap on the Internet.
Marvel has yet to really make any bold LGBTQ representations, so Captain Marvel’s comics-canon hair has become a huge symbol of representation for queer fans.
Whether the haircut is really more than a haircut, however, is not made clear in Endgame.
Avengers: Endgame is now playing in cinemas.
