Avengers Endgame: Captain America twist ending EXPLAINED to angry fans – He didn't do THIS

Avengers Endgame had an almost impossible task. How do you repair all the damage done in Infinity War without rendering the losses meaningless and breaking all the continuity rules you have set up across 23 movies? Fans had wracked their brains with time travel, alternate dimension and Quantum Realm theories and were left reeling when the Russo brothers finally revealed their grand plan. Despite the emotional pay-offs, many fans began to question the ending, especially Captain America’s divisive arc, which left some fans furious. WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS FROM HERE

Captain America goes back to return all the Infinity Stones to the places where the team had found them. Instead of returning to the present, Cap decides to live out his life with Peggy.

Fans protested that this would erase Peggy’s other life where she marries and has two children. It also leaves Bucky suffering for decades, Hydra controlling SHIELD and Howard Stark dead, even though Captain now knows all this in the past but presumably chooses to do nothing to protect the timeline so he can end up back on that bench as an old man.

Endgame had also said that by going back to a point in time a new branch of time splits off. This would solve all the problems above, but is then unravelled by the fact that Cap is still in the original timeline as an old man at the end.

The Russos have finally explained everything and suddenly opened up a major new possibility for the MCU.

Joe Russo told Entertainment Weekly: “If Cap were to go back into the past and live there, he would create a branched reality. The question then becomes, how is he back in this reality to give the shield away?

“Interesting question, right? Maybe there’s a story there. There’s a lot of layers built into this movie and we spent three years thinking through it, so it’s fun to talk about it and hopefully fill in holes for people so they understand what we’re thinking.”

The fact that Russos says “back in this reality” means Cap has actually been living in a separate branched timeline NOT the main one of the MCU and only jumped back across to this timeline at the end of his life.

It also opens up a huge possibility of showing what he was doing in that timeline. He hasn’t erased her other family since they still exist in the main timeline BUT what about Bucky?

Does Cap rescue him earlier now he knows what is going on?

Suddenly, we’re not so annoyed anymore and way more interested again.
