Avengers Endgame: Marvel movie COULD nab Oscar nomination, but will Robert Downey Jr?

Avengers: Endgame was the culmination of a decade of storytelling wrapped in a not-so-neat three-hour bow. The film, which boasted a massive cast, time travel, and plenty of Easter eggs, has been a delight to fans. Yet some are unsure of the film’s actual merit, which may make this a hard pill to swallow.

Could Robert Downey Jr get an Oscar nomination for his role as Iron Man?

Many believe the nomination is not out of the realm of possibility, though it would be for Best Supporting Actor.

WhatCulture wrote: “If Stark’s arc throughout the movie is as bleak and emotional as it seems to be, this combined with his stature as the figurehead of the MCU could result in him getting a ‘career Oscar’ of sorts.”

However, IndieWire disagreed and wrote: “Two-time Oscar nominee Robert Downey Jr has a remote shot at a Supporting Actor slot.

“That’s because actors will recognize that Iron Man/Tony Stark has a poignant emotional arc, from skeletal, pale and life-threatened at the start (rescued by the film’s resident deus ex machina, Captain Marvel) to happy family man, to the ultimate sacrificing hero. Maybe.”

The Best Picture nomination isn’t out of Avengers: Endgame’s grasp either.

Fandango’s Erik Davis wrote on Twitter: “There was a big screening of Avengers: Endgame for Academy members this week.

“Early sign of a major Oscars push? Is Endgame Best Picture material? I think it is.”

Oscar nominations for Superhero movies is not as unprecedented as some might think.

Black Panther was nominated for Best Picture, Best Original Score, Best Original Song, Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, Best Sound Editing, and Best Sound Mixing.

Of the seven awards, Black Panther won three: Best Original Score, Best Costume Design, and Best Production Design.

Other major blockbusters to get Oscar nominations include multiple Lord of the Rings movies, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, and The Dark Knight.

Whether Avengers: Endgame is Best Picture material or not remains to be seen.
