Avengers: Endgame is now the second highest grossing film of all time, having beaten the Titanic film with $1.6billion in total earnings. Now the latest Marvel creation is just half a billion pounds away from the highest grossing film, Avatar. The film was a conclusive finale to the current Marvel Infinity Saga, and altered – and in some cases eliminated – storylines for every major character. Thor went through some major changes off the back of Avengers: Infinity War, with a dramatic weight gain.

Did Chris Hemsworth gain weight for Avengers: Endgame?

Those familiar with the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be well-acquainted with Thor, the god of thunder.

As a demigod, Thor’s physique is a big part of his character, as he possesses superhuman strength.

Chris Hemsworth spends a lot of his time outside of acting building up this trademark look, and for Avengers: Endgame this was no different.

For Endgame, Chris Hemsworth kept his normal chiselled looks but donned a fat suit.

Thor’s new look was a result of the fallout from Avengers: Infinity War when he failed to stop Thanos.

His weight stays the same throughout the film, which drew criticism from some who believed the move was “fat-shaming”.

Chris Hemsworth was very happy with the fat Thor concept however, after the comedic approach to his character in Thor: Ragnarok.

Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo revealed Chris Hemsworth was excited about the idea.

In an interview Sirius XM, Joe Russo said: “Hemsworth is up for anything. He likes to take risks.”

Anthony added: “Before the script was ready when we called him to pitch the character arc, he was either still finishing or had just finished Ragnarok.

“But he was so energised by the work he had done with Taika Waititi in that movie in terms of coming up with a more comedic and irreverent Thor.”

Although audiences were ultimately split by the appearance of fat Thor, the Russos thought the character was “inspiring”.

They focussed on Thor’s ability to overcome his trauma from Avengers: Infinity war, with the loss of his brother, mother, father and planet.

Anthony explained: “Joe and I love subversion and to take the God who looks like a God and find a way to subvert that and re-invent the character.

“We find ‘fat Thor’ as inspiring as any version of Thor because he’s so relatable.”
