Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is Quentin Tarantino’s ninth, and some fear his final, film. The director is known for his highly stylised and expertly crafted, if gratuitously violent, movies. His latest outing takes place in 1960s Hollywood, amidst the Manson murders and the summer of love. But Bruce Lee’s daughter has spoken out furiously over the film.

Sharon Lee, Bruce Lee’s daughter, runs the estate of her father who died at the age of 32 in 1973.

About Tarantino, Sharon Lee told Deadline: “In these instances, there are a lot of different ways you can go.

“If they contacted me, I could be completely unreasonable and a pain in the ass and make all kinds of ridiculous demands — but they don’t know that I’m not going to do that.

“A lot of times, the best practice is ‘we’ll just stay away from that so we don’t have to even open that can of worms.’

“With Tarantino’s film, to not have been included in any kind of way, when I know that he reached out to other people but did not reach out to me, there’s a level of annoyance — and there’s part of me that says this is not worth my time and my energy.

“Let’s just see how the universe deals with this one.”

Bruce Lee is played by Mike Moh in the Tarantino movie, which follows an actor and his stunt double who are trying to reinvigorate their careers.

The official plot synopsis reads: “Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood visits 1969 Los Angeles, where everything is changing, as TV star Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his longtime stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) make their way around an industry they hardly recognize anymore.

“The ninth film from the writer-director features a large ensemble cast and multiple storylines in a tribute to the final moments of Hollywood’s golden age.”

Where Bruce Lee’s story fits into the overarching plot remains to be seen.

How Lee’s life is dealt with in the confines of the Tarantino movie is still unknown – both to the public and Shannon Lee herself.

Shannon Lee is not against her father’s legacy being used, but it has to be “in alignment with my father’s legacy and with my family and with my family’s legacy,” she said.

“We can be as creative and as free and as awesome as we want to be, but if, at the end, if come to me and say ‘I want to make a buddy cop movie where Bruce Lee goes around giving people the death touch and scaling walls like Spider-Man,’ I’m going to say no.””

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is out in cinemas on August 14, 2019.
