Gladiator 2: Producers confirm when Gladiator sequel will take place

A Gladiator sequel has been in the works since 2001, only a year after the first film was released. Since then the sequel has languished in development hell, going through a variety of incarnations. Gladiator 2’s producers Walter F Parkes and Laurie MacDonald recently spoke to Hey U Guys to give fans a glimpse into what the sequel will be like. But there still aren’t many salient details to reveal to those wanting release dates and cast lists. Express.co.uk has all the details.

While on a press tour for the MiB movie, Parkes and MacDonald were asked about the Gladiator sequel.

MacDonald said: “We’re working with Ridley Scott, that’s one we wouldn’t touch unless we felt in a way to do it was legitimate.

“We’re working with an amazing writer as well, Peter Craig.”

Craig is responsible for adapting The Hunger Game novels to the big screen.

Parkes added: “It picks up the story 30 years later… 25 years later.”

The plot of Gladiator 2 is rumoured to focus on a grown-up Lucius.

Lucius is the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix).

This would make some sense as Crowe’s Maximus was slain at the end of the film, making it impossible for him to feature. However, never rule out the impossible.

In the original Gladiator movie, Maximus, a once-powerful general, is forced to become a common gladiator.

The emperor’s son, Commodus, is enraged when he is passed over as heir in favour of his father’s favourite general.

He kills his father and arranges the murder of the general’s family, and the general is sold into slavery to be trained as a gladiator – but his subsequent popularity in the arena threatens the throne.

A Russel Crowe cameo in Gladiator 2 is highly unlikely since the character died at the end of the movie.

There are opportunities for other actors, however, to reprise their roles.

In particular, Djimon Hounsou’s character Juba could very well return.

Gladiator was nominated for 12 Oscars, of which the movie won five.

More details about the sequel are sure to surface as the production ramps up.
