Andy Murray v Fabio Fognini LIVE from Wimbledon 2017: Latest updates and score

Between him and a spot in the fourth round stands Fabio Fognini, the No28 seed against who Murray has far from a perfect record.

In their six meetings, he has lost three times including the most recent one on the clay of Rome earlier this year.

However, they have never played on grass and the world No1 will be much more confident of overcoming the Italian on this surface.

Andy Murray v Fabio Fognini LIVE updates

7.20pm: I think it’s the unpredictability of Fognini that leaves Murray stumped. He’s just held serving at 2-4 but he doesn’t look happy at all.

7.15pm: This is all a bit ugly from Murray. Fognini is a guy who always seems to unsettle him and now he saves the first break point in game five with an ace but then nets a forehand and is 3-2 down. The champion needs to find his rhythm here.

7.05pm: I don’t think you’ll be surprised to read that as soon as Fognini gets a break, he gives it right back.

Murray follows the break back with a love hold and the Scot is probably breathing a little more easily now. He’s also checking his notes in the bag. Not sure what they say but maybe “don’t miss”?

6.57pm: I have to say, Murray does not look like the complete tennis player we all know he is today.

A massive double-fault in the opening game of the second set makes it 30-40 and he is having a big old chat with himself. It’s as though he’s trying psyche himself up for the match.

An ace saves the first one but a wayward forehand brings up another and Fognini breaks to take the lead in the second set.

6.48pm: Well that set disappeared quickly. Fognini does his best to fight back, drawing 15-30 only for Murray to produce a kick-serve that practically bounces over the Italian’s head!

But he does eventually get break point only for Murray to serve wide into the ad court and run round the return to hit a terrific forehand winner. Exemplary from the champion.

The effect of the hold is to put the pressure back on Fognini and his serve goes to pieces. Murray breaks to love with two double-faults to seal it.

Murray takes the first set 6-2.

6.40pm: Murray draws the first break point of the match with Fognini serving at 2-3, the Italian missing three forehands in the game.

The Scot really just puts the return back into play and allows his opponent to repeat the trick, netting a forehand to give the world No1 first blood.

Murray leads 4-2.

6.25pm: A weird first game as Murray hits two exemplary aces follow by a double-fault but the world No1 holds anyway.

Fognini’s first service game is less straight forward and Murray gets a look at a second serve at 30-30 but can’t capitalise.

Murray to serve at 1-1.

6.10pm: Murray is out on court at last, two bags in hand. One presumably for rackets and the other for playing kit. He looks like he’s going for a long weekend in the Highlands. Maybe Mull. Or Lochgilphead. Somewhere like that.

Fognini meanwhile has the headband and facial hair. He’s also got some strapping on the back of his left calf.

Boris Becker has just revealed he went to Fognini’s wedding. Oh to be a fly on the wall at that rehearsal dinner.

Murray to serve…

5.57pm: There we go. Rafael Nadal is through in straight sets after winning a third-set tie-break and now we can start preparing for the arrival of Murray.

Excellent news.

5.40pm: Come on Rafa – some of us have got home favourites to support! Not me – I’m impartial – but Centre Court and Murray Mound are gagging for their man.

Looks like we’re going to a tie-break with the Spaniard in the third. If he loses it, I can go and make some more coffee but to be honest, I’m ready for my Murray now.

5.20pm: This is comfortably Murray’s biggest test of the week against a man who has his number a bit. This is grass which is of course different but even so this is a psychological challenge of sorts.

Either way, first we need to wait for Rafael Nadal to finish on Centre Court. He is two sets up against Karen Khachanov and serving at 3-4 in the third, so barring anything unexpected, it shouldn’t be too much longer.
