Midsommar age rating: Is Midsommar rated 15 or 18? How old must you be to see it?

Midsommar comes from bonafide horror director Ari Aster, the man behind last year’s hit Hereditary. This year he brings Midsommar, a much more brightly lit horror film, but no less terrifying. Though there may be some young horror fans about, they may not be able to see the film in cinemas.

What is the age rating for Midsommar? Is it 15 or 18?

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) gives Midsommar an 18 rating.

An 18 rating means: “No one younger than 18 may see an 18 film in a cinema.”

The BBFC cites strong gory images as the reasoning behind its decision.

Warning the below explanation gives away some spoilers for Midsommar.

The disturbing images the BBFC cites include: “a sequence in which a woman and man jump to their deaths from a clifftop, landing on rocks below.

“In the man’s case the jump only breaks his legs and somebody has to smash his head with a mallet to kill him.

“In another scene, a man’s body is seen suspended from a ceiling with his back flayed.

“Elsewhere in the film, dead bodies are presented in macabre rituals.”

“There is also a murder-suicide scene in which a young woman takes her own life and those of her parents by gassing their home.”

The movie contains strong language, particularly the word f***.

Drug use is also part of Midsommar, as well as nudity.

The BBFC wrote: “There are also scenes in which people hallucinate after consuming magic mushrooms.”

There is also a scene in which: “a man and woman have sustained, thrusting intercourse while other women, naked, urge them on.”

So if you’re over 18 you’re more than welcome to get your socks scared off.

Midsommar is out in UK and USA cinemas on July 3, 2019.
