The Death Of Louis XIV (Cert 12A; 115mins) Director Albert Serra is determined to make us feel every agonising breath and physical discomfort in his painstaking portrait of the final days of the Sun King (Jean-Pierre Léaud). It is a gruelling film but one that weaves a sombre spell. In 1715 Louis has been on the throne for more than 70 years. He begins to suffer acute pains in his left leg and is confined to bed. All the King’s surgeons and all their desperate remedies cannot restore the monarch’s health. Everyone prepares for his death and the film is like a bedside vigil in a room with only candlelight to brighten the gloom and whispers to break the silence. A challenging film but an unforgettable one.
