The Little Mermaid cast: Who will voice Ariel in the Disney live-action remake?

The Little Mermaid is rounding out the cast of its live-action remake. Recently, the voices of Ursula, Scuttle, and Flounder were all but confirmed. Disney has now released the name of the star set to take on the role of Ariel.

Who will voice Ariel in The Little Mermaid movie?

American singer Halle Bailey has been cast to voice Ariel in The Little Mermaid remake.

Rob Marshall, who will direct the remake, said in a statement: “After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role.”

Bailey herself confirmed the role via the Twitter account for her musical act CHLOE X HALLE.

She and her sister Chloe rose to fame by posting covers of Beyonce’s music on YouTube.

Eventually, they were discovered by Beyonce herself and went on to open for the superstar on her Lemonade tour.

Awkwafina has been confirmed as the voice of Scuttle, while Jacob Tremblay and Melissa McCarthy are in talks to play Flounder and Ursula respectively.

Hot on the heels of directing Mary Poppins Returns, Rob Marshall will direct The Little Mermaid remake.

Long-time Disney collaborator Alan Menken will write new music for the film.

Lin-Manuel Miranda, who worked with Marshall on the Mary Poppins sequel, will work with Menken to write the lyrics.

The new movie will incorporate some songs from the original as well.

Describing the project to EW, Marshall said: “It’s about a woman finding her voice.”

“A girl finding her voice, actually. And that immediately just felt like an interesting, timely piece that resonated with us.”

David Magee wrote the script with Jane Goldman writing a previous draft.

The original 1989 movie was loosely based on the fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen.

Though like many other Disney adaptations, the darker elements of Anderson’s work were glossed over.

The Little Mermaid is scheduled to begin production in April 2020.
