The Irishman release date: When is the gangster epic on Netflix and in cinemas?
Last week the first teaser for Martin Scorsese’s Netflix epic The Irishman hit the internet. However, a release date wasn’t revealed expect the general timing of “Fall”. But now it looks like the 2020 Oscars contender will be released in select cinemas and on Netflix in mid to late October following some news. Today it was announced that the international premiere for The Irishman will close the 63rd BFI London Film Festival on Sunday, October 13th.
Scorsese himself and the cast are expected to attend the closing premiere.
The director said: “I’m extremely honoured to be having the International Premiere of The Irishman at the closing night of the BFI London Film Festival.
“This picture was many years in the making. It’s a project that Robert De Niro and I started talking about a long time ago, and we wanted to make it the way it needed to be made.
“It’s also a picture that all of us could only have made at this point in our lives. We’re all very excited to be bringing The Irishman to London.”
With a premiere set for October 13, this suggests that the cinematic and Netflix release dates for The Irishman – which are likely to be simultaneous – will be soon after the premiere, as is often the case with film releases.
The film’s official synopsis reads: “Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci star in Martin Scorsese’s THE IRISHMAN, an epic saga of organised crime in post-war America told through the eyes of World War II veteran Frank Sheeran, a hustler and hitman who worked alongside some of the most.
“Spanning decades, the film chronicles one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in American history, the disappearance of legendary union boss Jimmy Hoffa, and offers a monumental journey through the hidden corridors of organised crime: its inner workings, rivalries and connections to mainstream politics.”
Aside from The Irishman, there are some other hot contenders for the 2020 Oscars.
This month Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is released and currently has the best odds of 6-1 to win Best Picture at the 2020 Academy Awards.
This isn’t too surprising considering the incredible cast of Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie, the fact Tarantino hasn’t won for Best Director or Best Picture yet and most of all the Academy can’t resist a movie about their very own Tinsel Town.
Meanwhile, according to Coral, The Irishman is at 8-1 for the top Oscar while Cats, A Beautiful Day in The Neighbourhood, 1917, The Laundromat and The Lighthouse are all on 10-1.
The Irishman will premiere at the BFI London Film Festival on October 13, 2019.
