The Rise of Skywalker will be the ninth and final instalment in the main Star Wars Skywalker saga, which began with A New Hope back in 1977 and has since encompassed an original trilogy, a prequel trilogy and a sequel trilogy.

Gleeson’s Hux is among the villains of the latter set of the films; technically on the same side as Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), but constantly in a state of rivalry with him.

Speaking to Collider, he revealed his reaction to JJ Abrams and Chris Terrio’s screenplay for the big finale, due in December.

“It was cool, it was a page-turner,” he said.

“It was different than what I had thought. It was great. It was exciting.”

He added: “And also, you feel part of this tiny club that gets to read these things ahead of other people and that feels great. I really did enjoy that.

“I think it’s gonna be cool.”

Gleeson has previously spoken out about how the pressure of keeping the franchise’s secrets, and the fears he has that he’ll accidentally give too much away.

“I made the terrible mistake of reading the script, I know everything,” he joked on the Happy Sad Confused podcast in 2018.

“The nightmare is falling asleep on public transport… The nightmare is you wake up on a plane and someone’s dictating.

“You wake up and your mouth is shaping words, you wake up and you’re like ‘Skywalker did this.’ And then you realize you don’t know how long you’ve been speaking, and there’s a kid filming, there’s somebody writing it down.

“And because you’re in the air, you say ‘We need to have a talk before we land, I can access my bank account.'”

Daisy Ridley, who plays Rey, has also promised that the new movie will be a satisfying finale for admirers of the iconic franchise.

“What I would say is that I think it’s a brilliant end to the story,” she told Good Morning America.

“And like J.J. [Abrams] and Chris [Terrio], who wrote it as well, have done an incredible job of like wrapping up, because there are so many references, obviously, to the nine films.

“But also [it] exists in its own thing. So, I think people are going to feel very satisfied.”

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is out on December 19.
