Deepika Padukone: xXx actress ANGER at certain Bollywood stars 'They make me sad'

She is the highest-paid actress in Bollywood and one of the few to break into Hollywood. Regarded as a great beauty and fashion icon, Padukone is also fearlessly playing the survivor of an acid attack in her next film Chhapaak. She has drawn criticism before over her choice of projects and outspoken opinions but refuses to back down from what she believes. In a powerful new interview, the Padmaavat star speaks of her anger and frustration at other Bollywood icons.

In a major new interview with NET-A-PORTER’s weekly digital magazine PorterEdit, the actress discusses her career, activism and the issue of diversity in Hollywood and at home.

Padukone expresses her disappointment with many fellow Bollywood stars who do not shoulder the responsibility and opportunity offered by their fame and fortune.

She said; “I feel like a lot of actors are just content with what they do for themselves. I’m not that person. I feel like if I am in a certain place today, I would like to use that. It makes me angry sometimes to see extremely influential and talented people who don’t really try to do anything beyond what they want to do. That’s a personal choice, but it makes me sad.”

Now that she is also a producer, notably on Chhapaak, the star also seeks to raise working conditions for those less fortunate on film sets, saying there are “so many” issues that need tackling in the Bollywood industry: “The way crews are looked after. How many hours [they] spend on set. Not getting paid.” 

In wider society, Padukone has publicly admitted her own battle with depression and set up a foundation and initiatives to raise awareness. She also openly hit back at another actor Salman Khan after he questioned her public stance on the subject.

As well as her The Live Love Laugh Foundation to fight the stigma and ignorance surrounding depression and mental health, the actress has also been an advocate for women’s right’s in India.

However, she has also faced heavy criticism from conservative social and political groups. She was also part of a group accused of flaunting “drug use” and an unhealthy lifestyle by a prominent politician, Manjinder Singh Sirsa.

Padukone is currently in London with her husband Ranveer Singh, filming their new sporting drama ’83, about the Indian Cricket team’s victory at the 1983 World Cup. 

The pair were spotted walking the streets and posing for photographs with fans.
