Spider-Man fans call for Sony BOYCOTT after MCU withdrawal – Can a deal still be struck?
Fans will know that the film rights to Spider-Man are owned by Sony Pictures, who made a deal with Disney’s Marvel Studios for the character to appear in the MCU Avengers movies, starting with Captain America: Civil War. But now with Spider-Man: Far From Home out the way, the two studios have reassessed their agreement going forwards into Marvel Phase 4. But yesterday talks on Spider-Man’s future in the MCU ended without a new deal. In a statement, Sony spoke of Marvel boss Kevin Feige leaving as a producer because he’s too busy with the addition of the X-Men and Fantastic Four to the MCU, thanks to Disney’s merger with Fox.
However, this reason for talks breaking down has been called spin by Deadline, who broke the original story.
The outlet maintains their sources’ claims that Feige left as producer on future Tom Holland Spider-Man movies because of a disagreement over money.
Disney want 50% of profits from future projects, up from 5% of “first dollar” profits with 100% merchandising revenue.
You can understand why when Disney helped Sony get their highest-grossing movie of all time in Spider-Man Far From Home this summer.
However, 50% is a lot to swallow and Sony have not met those terms.
As a result of what looks like Spider-Man leaving the MCU, fans have been called for a Sony boycott.
The hashtags #BoycottSonySpiderMan and #BoycottSony have been trending today, suggesting that Marvel fans won’t go and see Spider-Man movies made outside of the MCU.
Disgruntled fans have pointed out the widely held belief that Tom Holland’s incarnation, overseen by Kevin Feige and Disney’s Marvel Studios, has been the best to date.
However, there’s still hope that a deal can be reached, according to Variety.
It’s also worth pointing out that this isn’t the first time an unreached Hollywood deal has leaked to allow pressure from fans to have an influence.
One example is a story last year broke that Henry Cavill had been dropped as Superman.
Whatever the case, hopefully, Sony and Disney can come to some sort of deal and continue a partnership that’s been nothing but wonderful since its inception.
Only then will Spider-Man 3 be green-lit for what could be a summer 2021 release.
